Inferencing, Design Testing Part 2, StoryBoard Conclusions

Reminder:

Last week forms came home for Teacher's Pet: Soapstone Carving. These forms need to be in as soon as possible with payment either online or by cheque. I have gotten lots of forms in with parents requesting to volunteer. I will confirm with those who responded first by email. This is happening March 15th from 10-12.

Last week forms came home for Bouldering (Climbing Wall) in the gym. This starts this week so if you have not sent the form back please do so immediately.

Reminder:
Hello Royal Oak School Parents and Guardians! Your son and/or daughter will be bringing home a letter soon telling you about our Skating Activity that will take place March 14, 15 and 16th. We are looking for several volunteers to help with tying skates, assisting on the ice, walking with classes from the school to the outdoor rink and helping with the skate shack. We are very fortunate to have booked the KidSport skate shack and we will need a few volunteers organizing and managing the skates and helmets. If you are available to help out during this activity please email Keri Blakeney at rosvolunteers@gmail.com for more information.
Thank you for supporting our Physical Education program!!

YMCA ARTIST IN RESIDENCE EXPERIENCE!
Mrs. Lagrana's class is fortunate and excited to be having an artist from YMCA come in and work with us on a project that will be a culmination of what we learned and experienced by being a part of the Gray Family YMCA Open Minds program back in October while also incorporating all that we have learned of community and celebrating making a connection with our own new Rocky Ridge Shane Homes YMCA.

This Friday March 9th will be our first session from 9:20-11:20. If you are able to volunteer to support this project please email me at imlagrana@cbe.ab.ca. I only need one volunteer for this upcoming Friday but for next Wednesay 2 or 3 would be great. Please email me right away if you are interested and available for this project.

Literacy
Inference
This week we are lucky to have our literacy specialist Ms. Wannamaker spending time in our class, sharing her expertise on how to become better reading detectives. We will be working on building our Comprehension skills by becoming experts at INFERENCING when we read.

Today we worked in groups to find the story clues that would help us to figure out what we knew and what we could inference from the text. This is a strategy that we will be working on all week.

SCIENCE
Testing Prototype #2: Insulating an Ice Cube!

Yesterday we had the opportunity to test our second thermos design. We noticed that some of our thermos's kept the heat out better than our first design and some did not. We talked about the benefit of testing and retesting due to material error and human error. We noticed that sometimes our thermometers were not giving us the results that we would expect and sometimes had to use a new one. We also noticed that measuring the temperature of ice is difficult!

These are all important things to talk about when learning the Scientific Method. Ask me what I noticed about my second test compared to my first. What would I do different next time?

Storyboard Mapping: Conclusion and Lesson Learned

Yesterday we finished planning for our Solution #2. This is the solution that will be successful in our story. We had to think about:

  • Previous Arctic story knowledge
  • Magic that could solve our problem
  • Descriptive Adjectives and Verbs
  • Scoop up our writing sentences

Today we added a conclusion. Ask me how I ended my story? We also had to come up with what lesson a reader would learn from reading our story?

Tomorrow we will start writing our story beginnings...
