James and the Giant Peach, Circle of Sports Day!

Literacy

Today we started reading James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. We are at Chapter 4.

If you would like to listen to it again or follow along or missed today at school here it is to listen to:

James and the Giant Peach Audio Book Part 1
Please only listen to up to chapter 3 as I will post again when we read the next chapters so that you don't end up being too far ahead of the class!

SPORTS DAY!

Tomorrow afternoon is Sports Day. We will have a kick-off assembly at 1:15 followed by sports stations galore!
Tomorrow is Sports Day at Royal Oak School. This year our theme is CANADA! Please wear your CANADA gear or Red and White. Students are asked to come prepared for the weather. Bring your hat, sunscreen, water bottle, proper footwear (no flip flops) and a light jacket. We're looking forward to a great afternoon filled with super fun activities and events!

Send an extra snack as we will have time at the end of sports day for watermelon (provided) and extra snack as needed!

PLASTIC PROBLEM

Today we continued talking about the Platic in the Ocean. We have been watching and discussing possible solutions, from multiple points of view.

Boyan Slat-The Ocean Clean-Up Prototype

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLAq19hGTBw

We looked at how this prototype has had to be tested, redesigned and tested in order to ensure that it works properly and to find the errors so that it can be made better (just like when we are building or inventing boats or magnetic inventions or water filters!)

https://www.theoceancleanup.com/

We have also been looking at plastic alternatives as a solution:

https://www.theoceancleanup.com/

https://www.waterdocs.ca/water-talk/2017/12/19/8-single-use-plastic-items-you-can-quit-right-now

We spent time today coming up with ideas and prototypes for these inventions. We looked at the problem in two ways:

1. How can we fix it now?

2. How can we prevent it for the future?

Math

Today we continued practicing double-digit subtraction with regrouping. Ask me to show you the steps to solve one of these problems!

Tomorrow we will start our family timelines. If you have not sent in a paper with family ages on it yet please do so.

Reading Like a Researcher, Subtraction Practice, The Plastic Problem, Maud Lewis Art!

A reminder that tomorrow is the Royal Oak School Stampede Breakfast. Rain or shine, bring your family for some free pancakes and sausage! Pancakes will be served from 7:30am-8:30am and the event will run till 9:00am. Oh and don't forget to wear your Western attire. See ya'll there!

Literacy

We have been reading like researchers! We have been reading an article about the Plastic Problem and using Think Notes to help us think and discuss our reading.

THINK NOTES

Today we summarized what we had read and shared important parts with the class:

Tomorrow we will write a summary piece, including what we have learned and how we feel about this news.

SUBTRACTION PRACTICE

We have been practicing subtraction using the traditional method and regrouping.

We put the numbers we are borrowing on top in the boxes to help us remember before we subtract.

We can use work mats and base ten materials to help us visualize the steps, as we subtract, borrow and regroup.

The Plastic Problem

Today we did a mind map of all of the problems that are being caused by garbage in the ocean.

We then decided which problem we wanted to focus on and got into groups to discuss the problem, empathize with those it is impacting and to design and invent a prototype that would fix this problem or create a solution.

Art

Today we learned about a famous Nova Scotiia Artist. Her name was Maud Lewis. She was famous for painting landscapes of Nova Scotia, rural pictures and animals. We started a Lighthouse/Coastal Landscape picture. Today we sketched and made sure we had our horizon line. Tomorrow we will mix colours and begin painting.

Volunteers Needed

Hi, ROS parents -

Over the next few weeks, we have a number of fun events planned for our students and families. To facilitate these events, we require a large number of parent volunteers to help. If you are available for any/all of the following opportunities, please email our ROS Volunteer Coordinators (Keri and Niki) at rosvolunteers@gmail.com

1. Lunch Supervision - Tuesday, May 22nd - 11:45a to 1p - We need 4 more volunteers to help with supervising the students while the staff is taking a group photo.

2. Pancake Breakfast - Friday, May 25th - 7a to 9:15a - We need 6 more volunteers to help serve pancakes, sausages and pour syrup!

3. Sports Day - Wednesday, May 30th - 12p until the end of the school day - This is a fun afternoon at ROS! All students will participate in various events in and around the school. We require 25+ volunteers to help manage a station. Volunteers will also be cutting watermelon before the event begins.

4. Bike to School Day - Tuesday, June 5th - *Two Shifts - 8:20a and 3:30p - Students and parents are encourage to ride their bikes to school this day. We need a minimum of 10 volunteers for a morning shift and another 10 for the afternoon shift to tag, sort and store bikes. Volunteers will also be cutting oranges as a treat for the students.

5. Year End BBQ - Tuesday, June 26th - 10:30a to 1:30p - To wrap up the school year, we are having a BBQ on the second last day of school. If you have a child in Grade 1 or 2, we need 20 volunteers to help with this event. (Participating Kindergarten parents will be eating with their children and Grade 3 parents will be attending the Farewell this day.)

Thanks in advance for your willingness to help with these events! If you have any questions, please emailROSvolunteers@gmail.com

Math Racks, Testing our Boats, and The Plastic Problem

Reminder: There is no school tomorrow Friday, May 18th due to a professional development day and there is no school Monday, May 21st due to Victoria Day. Enjoy your long weekend!

Math

This week we have been exploring using Math Racks as a way to visualize groups of 10's and 5's.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgluhL1dVMU

We have been using these math racks to help us subitize and build numbers and to see how a number can be made up of friendly numbers (7 is a 5 and 2 more) and (10 is a 5 and a 5).

We have been using these tools to help us when we subtract. When we are given a subtraction equation, we then try to solve it using the math racks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uhHMLiYiOU

We then solved double-digit subtraction questions using math racks and writing the corresponding equations in our math books. We then shared our solutions with each other to see the different ways we were able to use 5's and 10's and making ten to solve subtraction equations.

DOUBLES

We have been practicing seeing and building doubles to help us add and subtract. We are able to do this mentally until 5+5=10 but need some practice with the doubles past 10.
If we know our doubles then it is easier to use doubles -1 or doubles -2  or doubles +1  or doubles =2 as a strategy when we add or subtract!

SCIENCE
Testing our Boats
We tested our boats using a rubric the students came up with:

We then had to discuss our results with a partner, thinking about all of the things we have learned about boats and buoyancy.

After sharing our reflections we then got feedback from a peer about what we might do to improve, add or change our boat if it had areas it needed improvement in.

We then had the opportunity to start building a second prototype. We could use our existing design and just adapt it in some way or we could begin again if we thought we needed to.
Next week we will test or new designs and see if we made any improvements.

The Plastic Problem

We have been talking about the Plastic Problem, specifically the garbage patches in our Oceans and specifically the Atlantic Ocean. We have looked at how this plastic is affecting the sea life and ourselves. We will continue to look at this issue and its impacts over the next few weeks. We will also be exploring ways to solve the problems and what we can do to help.
