Alien-In-Line Skating Day 1

Ask me what I learned today at In-Line skating? What was the best part? What was hard?

Our next day for In-Line will be Monday, May 7th.

Math

Today we finished our charts for figuring out how old each family member was when Carlos was born and then again for when Maria was born. We noticed some patterns in the numbers:

Ask me what patterns I noticed?

We then worked on answering some different questions about ages:

We began using the number line to see if we could find the difference between the two numbers. We explored using addition to do this. Ask me to show you how I would solve these problems on a number line? What is the equation I am trying to solve? Did I show my work (number line)? Did I write a statement about what I was solving? We will continue to explore these questions for Carlos and Maria tomorrow.

Science Rotations

All week we will be flex grouping among all of the grade 2 classrooms in order to learn some important lessons on Buoyancy. Yesterday we went to Mrs. Vogan's room and did an experiment about Balance and Stability.

We looked at how the shape of the boat and how weight is distributed on the boat all affect its stability and balance.

Today we went to Ms. Devereux's room and learned about: DISPLACEMENT

ALL OF THESE CONCEPTS WILL REALLY HELP US WHEN WE PLAN FOR BUILDING A BOAT NEXT WEEK!

People of Nova Scotia

Yesterday we had a guest speaker who grew up Acadian and was able to share lots of information with us about Jobs, Holidays, Celebrations and her memories of growing up Acadian. Ask me what I remember most.

Food

We looked at some of the traditional food and recipes of the Acadians. We decided which one we would like to try.

Expulsion of the Acadians

We learned about the Deportation of the Acadian people from Nova Scotia. We talked about if this was a fair decision and how we felt about people who had lived here for over a century being deported just because they were originally from France.

The story of Evangeline

We learned the story of Evangline and Gabriel. They were an Acadian Girl and Boy who were to be married. They were seperated by the Acadian Expulsion and Evangeline spent her whole life trying to find Gabriel. We listened to the french ballad and read the words as we listened. This is a famous story among Acadians an if you travel to Nova Scotia you will see many statues of Evangeline.
