Crazy Socks Day, Making a number line, Adding and Subtracting 10, Skip Counting by 5 and more!

We continued Spirit Week by celebrating Crazy Sock Day and reading another Dr. Seuss book: The Lorax. Dr. Seuss sure loved to rhyme. He even made up words to make them rhyme!

Remember tomorrow is the last day of school before Winter Break and our final day of Spirit Week. It is CRAZY HAIR DAY! We will also have a surprise visitor that day.

Reminder: Tomorrow is the last day of school and we will see you back refreshed, recharged and ready to learn on January 7th, 2019.

Math

We have been talking about Number Lines in math. What is a number line? How is it used? Where do we see them? How can they help us build numbers, solve equations and visualize numbers?

We decided to make our own number line, using graph paper, rulers and pens. We decided to skip count by 5's using the blue lines of the graph paper as equal distance points and so that we would have enough room on our line to go past 100.

Number Lines

Ask me what the most challenging part of this was?

We had to review skip counting by 5's and look at the patterns we see happening on a hundreds chart when we move by 5's. What is happening with the place value when we skip count by 5's? What pattern do we see?

Practice this at home using the interactive hundreds chart. Can you see the pattern?

Today we continued working on ages questions. This time we looked at Maria from the story. She is 10 years old. We were challenged to figure out how old everyone in the family was when Maria was born?

We can use addition to get to the number:

We can use subtraction to get to the number:

We can use our personal number lines to help us to do this.

Ask me which I prefer...adding to get the answer or subtracting?

Skip counting by 10's helps us to be able to move quickly on the number line both forwards and backwards. Knowing how to get to our landmark numbers also helps up to be able to move more efficiently.

Ask me how I am figuring out these problems? How can I use the number line to do so?

GoogleSlides, Caroling, Spirit Week and Math

Literacy

Today we continued creating a GoogleSlides presentation about the novel The Search for Delicious. We practiced logging into GoogleSlides.

We used our CBE email and our password to log in.

We then used the + sign to add our first slide. We titled it, used text boxes to add the title and author and practiced changing the font size and colour.

Today we used PhotoBooth to take a picture of our Creative Title Page that we had drawn. We then dragged it to our desktops and uploaded it to our presentation.

We got to practice turning our picture right side up, cropping it to fit and bringing our words to the front.

Tomorrow we will complete slide 2 where we will be deciding if we enjoyed the book or not? Would we recommend it to someone else? Why or why not? We will practice using a text box, editing for spelling, and changing font, making our print bold and highlighting our text.

Caroling

Today was our first day of Caroling in the Gym. Ask me what my favorite song we sang was? We will also be Caroling on Wednesday morning at 11:30.

Spirit Week: Today we wore our PJs, brought our favorite book and Caroled in the gym.

Tomorrow is wear a HAT to school day!

Math

Today we continued trying to figure out the difference between two numbers. We used a number line to continue answering the question How old was _____ when Carlos was born?

Ask me how I solved the problem, using a number line.

We will be working on this all week using Hops, Skips and Jumps to move on the number line between to numbers to solve how much in between or the difference between two numbers.

Practicing skip counting by 10's from different starting points up to 100 helps us to move on the number line.

Tomorrow we will begin building our own number lines to help us notice how many numbers is between 0-10, 10-20, 20-30 all the way past 100.

We will also practice skip counting by 10's on our number line and seeing if we notice any patterns.

Dr. Seuss Spirit Week Schedule, Tape Train of the Future, and Paper Mache Bones!!

Home Reading Update: For this week of home reading there was no homework sent home in your home reading bags. Please read your new books and practice using the 5-finger retell orally. Next week there will be homework to do with GoogleSlides and creating a booktalk/book review but that homework will come home to everyone and NOT in your home reading bag. It will also be posted on the BLOG.

Reminder:

Next week is the Dr. Seuss Spirit Week.

Monday: Wear your PAJAMAS to school and bring your favorite BOOK!

Schedule of the weeks events:

Tape Train Building Challenge:

Today after some time to reflect and design our train of the future we finally began building. Since this was also part of the BEAKERHEAD challenge to use TAPE to build a train from the future (3018) we mostly had to use tape. But we are attempting to build a Maglev Train that will use the magnetic force of repulsion to move and that is made for the future. We will continue building this project and you will be able to see it at our upcoming Celebration of Learning.

Paper Mache Art Installation!

Today was our first day of making paper mache buffalo bones! This will be a part of our Celebration of Learning and a Museum/Art installation that will tell a story of the past. It was messy and goopy but so much fun!!!

Literacy

Summarizing Nonfiction

This week we have been reading articles and using the think mark of the * to indicate all of the most important parts of what we are reading. We then worked in our reading groups to fill out a nonfiction summary graphic organizer.

We also had to make note of any new and interesting words that we did not know the meaning of. This week we will also be practicing using an online dictionary to help us figure out words we are not sure of. This is a way to Expand our Vocabulary when we read.

Magnetic Inventions

Yesterday and today we got to build our magnetic inventions. We worked hard to make our inventions become reality. We also had time to adapt or change our inventions if we had thought of something different or had new ideas while building. We also used a rubric to decide how well we had done for different aspects of our invention:

Ask me how I felt my group did? What would I add or change for next time?

Book Talks

Today we finished reading our class novel "The Search for Delicious". We were challenged to come up with a book cover that would capture the perspective readers attention. Tomorrow we will log into GoogleSlides for the first time to upload a picture of our new cover page. We will also be learning about creating a book talk or book review on google slides as a way of sharing something we have read.

Math

Number Lines

Yesterday we read the book Bisabuelo Gregorio by Katherine Fosnot. It is all about a little 8 year old boy Carlos and how he becomes curious to know how old all the members of his family were when he was born.

We practiced using a number line to figure this out:

Tomorrow we will continue to practice using number line strategies and reviewing Hops (10s) Skips (5s) and Jumps (1s) to move efficiently on a number line.

We will continue looking at the difference between two numbers and using adding to figure this out.
