Tomorrow Thursday September 29th at 5:30 pm is the Family Fun Fall Fair! Please come and enjoy food trucks, games and a chance to meet your neighbors and people in your community. It will run until 7:30 pm. Dress warmly!

Today in math we continued to work on organizing classroom inventory. Ask me if I changed my strategy and how I decided to figure out the sum of my objects or what they counted to altogether?

Today in gym we practiced throwing and catching bean bags.

In writing we worked on creating juicy and descriptive colour words. Ask me what my colour was and what different ways I came up with to describe it?

Today we learned how to summarize. We re-read chapter 4 from “The Girl From Turtle Mountain” and we had to write 4 sentences about events we thought were important in that chapter. Ask me what things I wrote about?

Today in Math we read the story The MacSloppy Family. We sorted and organized different materials in partners. Ask me what my strategy was? Ask me if I ended up counting my items yet? 

Today in gym we practiced for the Terry Fox run. Ask me about the route?

In writing we wrote descriptive sentences about our object. Ask me what kinds of sentences I wrote? 

We talked about Stranger Danger. Ask me what I learned.  We also reviewed playground safety. Ask me one way to stay safe on the school playground?

We read Chapter 4 of The Girl From Turtle Mountain. We sketched while we listened. Ask me what happened at the picnic with the ice-cream and the bowls? Ask me what Peter did to make this happen?

Volunteer Orientation Evening - Tonight

This invitation is for all parents of students who attend Royal Oak School who are interested in volunteering. The volunteer orientation will be on Monday, September 26 at 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  The purpose of this evening to familiarize you with practices at Royal Oak School and to let you know about all the wonderful opportunities for volunteering within the school. The students’ experiences have been enriched at Royal Oak School because of all the volunteers who have dedicated time in some way to our school. As Mahatma Ghandi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the services of others.”  We look forward to seeing you.

On Friday, September 30th, Royal Oak School and William D. Pratt School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run.  Students will gather on the field between the two schools to take part in the annual 30-minute run, which is scheduled to begin at 10:00am. On this day please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed for the weather (including running shoes).  If the weather is poor, students will walk inside the school during their PE class time.

We are asking that each child donate a “Toonie for Terry” for the Terry Fox Foundation during the week of September 27-30th.  All parents/guardians who are interested in joining their child in this event are more than welcome.

We do require a fair number of volunteers for this event to ensure its success.  If you have security clearance and if you are able to volunteer during the run time, kindly contact our school Volunteer Coordinator at rosvolunteers@gmail.com.

Today we used our sense of sight to continue coming up with juicy and descriptive words for our writing. On Monday we will be learning how to put all of these new words into sentences. Ask me what descriptive words I came up with in my group for my object.

For math we continued working on 'Number Neighbors' and building numbers using the strategy of one more and one less and if I know 57 then I know that 56 is one less and 58 is one more. Ask me to tell you some number neighbors that I know.

Today we continued looking at a picture of Frank from the past. Ask me what I imagined.

We read a book called Keeley:Book One The Girl From Turtle Mountain. We started drawing/sketching in our visual sketchbooks about the pictures we can see in our mind from listing to the words. Ask me what I drew?

Today we walked to William B Pratt for our practice evacuation. Ask me what I remember about the evacuation?

We practiced read to someone or partnered reading with Mrs. McDonald's class today. Ask me who my partner was and how we need to sit when we are reading to a partner?

Using the iPads for the first time this year was so much fun. We learned how to log into IRIS and posted a picture. Ask me to show it to you?

Please remember to dress appropriately for Calgary's ever changing weather. We need to be prepared as we do go outside in light rain and chilly conditions (unless it is -20 or colder).

Thursday September 15th, 2016

Reminder: Blue forms for Student-Centered conferences came home today. Please fill them out and bring them in with you when you come next week to meet Mrs. Lagrana.

Tomorrow is early dismissal and school is done at 12:48.

Today in music we had a pretend fire drill and lockdown practice. Ask me what I remember?

In gym we played a game called Fishes and Whales. Ask me the rules?

Today we practiced Daily 5 and tomorrow is our 25 minute challenge!

In writing we continued our imaginative story about what Rabbit does to get away from Wolf. We practiced drawing a rabbit and a wolf. Tomorrow we get to fold our drawing into a booklet and add some more info like title, setting, characters and problem.

In math we used the mini whiteboards and shared our problem solving strategies.

During inquiry Mrs. McDonald's class and ours continued to work on coming up with many ideas around what our imagination could turn a box into? Ask me about what new ideas I had.

Reminder: Today we are bringing home the school information package. There is quite a bit of information for you to look over. Please make sure you ask me to give it to you or show you where it is in my backpack. 

Today at gym we played a game called Donkey Tag...ask me how to play it! We also changed our squads a little bit today. Ask me if I moved places or to a different squad.

We practiced Daily 5 Read to Self today for 20 minutes and got 2 medium handfuls of marbles. Ask me how long we are going to try to get to by Friday?

In math today we used mini white boards and shared some different number counting strategies.

We used our imagination to transform a box. Ask me what I created.

Today we had a movement break using our smart board and Just Dance Kids...Ask me which dances we did?

Today for our Circle of Courage meeting we talked about things we need to remember to keep the gym a safe place when we are having physical education class. Ask me what I need to remember to do to stay safe in the gym? We also talked about feelings and when we might feel excited, angry or happy.

We also read the book "The Day the Crayons Quit". It was funny!

Today we finished our self-portraits and worked on our skin colors.

Today we had Mrs. Wong come in for a quick visit and we started reading the book "The Day the Crayons Quit". Ask me what it was about?
We did some writing using our imagination from a book we read called "Use your imagination but Be Careful What you wish for". Ask me what I did in my imagination when I pretended to be rabbit?Image result for Use your imagination (but be careful what you wish for)it?

We practiced read to self again and worked on reading the whole time and using our inside voices so that Mrs. Lagrana can read with students or work with groups. We practiced improving our independence.

Today we had music. We practiced making noise and beats with our body to a musical story.
