Homework, Math Word Problems and Subtraction, and Conflict Resolution Skills

There is no School Friday March 22nd as it is Student Led Conferences and then SPRING BREAK. We will see you back at school on Monday April  1st 2019.

Homework!!

Over Spring Break please continue practicing your Breaking News article of choice. Student's will be bringing these articles home to practice over break. They have made Think Marks during literacy and annotated their articles to remember where they want to add excitement or expression.

They have also been practicing how to read to an audience and get them hooked and wanting to hear more!

Please have your child practice as this as much as possible over the break. Then record them reading like a news reporter and upload the video to IRIS. They will be sharing the first week back at school. They can use fun props like ties, lab coats, microphones, stethoscopes, etc.

Math Problem Solving and Subtraction

This week we have been solving word problems using CUBES as a strategy to help us remember all of the steps.

When we are solving word problems it is important to read the whole question and circle, box and underline before attempting to evaluate and solve so that we are sure what the question is asking us to do!

Here are some important math words that help us to know what kind of problem we are solving:

Or Addition?

We have been practicing subtraction problems and what to do when you don't have enough and need to regroup (borrow) more to solve!

We have been practicing the strategy of stacking by putting the numbers on top of each other in a T-Chart. We have been drawing and using base ten blocks to build the number we are taking away from.

We have also been looking at some subtraction rules:

CIRCLE MEETING

Today during our Circle Meeting we talked about how we can resolve conflict in the classroom. Sometimes when we work in groups or partners we might have a conflict. We have been working on recognizing when we can solve these problems through talking, brainstorming and polite interaction and when we might need help.

Today we role played some different problems and acted out using the Conflict Corner and Calming Carpet area to brainstorm some solutions. Ask me what I brainstormed and what scenario I role played with my partner.

Ted Harrison Art, Reading Like a NewsReporter Homework, No-Waste Wednesdays!

Friday we learned about a famous Canadian Artist named Ted Harrison.

https://tedharrison.ca/pages/about

We drew our picture using big lines and thinking about the foreground, mid-ground and background and the horizon line of our picture.

We then used pastel and water color to create a vivid, colorful landscape of the Arctic.

We then added our step-by-step drawing, that we cut out and pasted on to our Arctic Landscape.

We can't wait to show them off to you at our upcoming Student-Led Conferences next week!!

NO WASTE WEDNESDAYS!

The Green Team is working hard to promote reducing our Carbon Footprint by Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. We will be having our first “No-Waste Wednesday” (aka Litter-less lunch) on Wednesday, March 20th. We encourage kids to bring no prepackaged food to school and to be creative in using only reusable or recyclable containers to pack their snacks and lunch. After this Wednesday, these “No-Waste Wednesdays” will occur once per week for the remainder of the year. We will be weighing the impact of this initiative in Green Team Club by looking at the amount of landfill garbage we are able to reduce for the months of March, April, May and June.

Check out this quick video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq4FHuEqa5s

Just a quick friendly reminder that we are still collecting plastic milk jug, water bottle and juice bottle/carton lids to use for our Green Team Club recycled art project. Please continue to send in with your child, in order to ensure that we have enough combined to make a wonderful art piece for our school! We will continue to collect these plastic lids until the week after Spring Break April 5th, 2019.

Literacy

FLUENCY

We will continue to be reading like News Reporters all week long to build our fluency. Please remember to choose an article and bring in to use this week if you didn't already send one in on Friday.

Literacy, Finishing our Story Boards, Double Digit Addition with Regrouping Practice, Global Warming

****Today forms came home for our upcoming Student-Led Conferences. They have 3 questions we would like you to think about and fill out to discuss in more depth during conferences next week. If you have not booked a time slot yet, please do so.

Literacy

In Literacy this week we have been reading non-fiction articles about how climate change is affecting the Arctic. We have looked at Melting Sea Ice, Ocean Acidification, Melting Permafrost and Sea Levels Rising.

Each reading group has been responsible for making think notes about the article they are reading and circling any unknown or tricky words.

After reading the article multiple times and making these notes each group then was responsible to read their article to the class, practicing Reading Like a News Reporter!

When we read for an audience we must use strategies to improve our fluency and expand our vocabulary.

We have also explored some news websites for kids. These websites have kid friendly articles about current events and we will be using articles of interest to improve our fluency and expand our vocabulary by Reading like a News Reporter!

We will continue to look at these sites and find news that seems interesting to us. Please visit one or two of the sites and start to notice articles of interest to you. On Fridays please bring in 1 article that you would be interested in practicing reading and presenting to the class alone or with a partner (once you have had time to practice reading like a news reporter).

This week and next we will also be working on adding exclamation points ! to where we want our voices to have excitement or question marks ? to where we were asking a question. We imagined that we worked for CTV News, Global or CBC and we watched Anchor Woman and Anchor Men and noted how we thought they looked, sounded and seemed when they were reporting the news.

Finishing our Story Boards!

Today we finished our story boards by adding a conclusion and a lesson or message.

Tomorrow we will begin writing our Arctic Stories by starting with a Good Beginning.

Good Beginnings:

Think about how you want to begin your story? What will be the most interesting way and capture your readers attention so that they are hooked and want to read more?

We will continue practicing and modeling some of these ways to start a story so that we can pick one that we feel confident trying and that we think will hook our readers.

Math
Regrouping and Stacking

Today we reviewed place value and broke numbers into their ones (cabins), tens (houses) and hundreds (mansions).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F3AycEDksY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omkDLmfvetk&t=104s

For example if I have 2 mansions, 4 houses and 3 cabins what number does that make?

Can I count it out starting from the mansions (100, 200), counting on adding in the houses (210, 220, 230, 240) and finally adding the cabins (241, 242, 243).

Can I explain how I know and not just what the number is?

We also practiced building two numbers and then adding them together.

We looked at what regrouping means and why we need to regroup if we have ten cabins or ten houses.

145+265 can also be written like using the stacking method where two numbers are stacked on top of one another to add them together.

If you have ten houses (tens) they cannot live on house street anymore and need to move to Mansion street! (hundreds).

Now we have our final answer of 410.

We will be practicing this strategy of stacking and regrouping as needed all week.

Global Warming/Hot and Cold Temperature

Today we made a mind map of what we have learned about Hot and Cold Temperatures. We made note of important temperatures that we have learned.

We also talked about Greenhouse Gasses, and Global Warming and what we can do to help restore the Balance here on Earth.

Arctic Story Boards, Prototype 2 and Step by Step Drawing

Final Reminder: If you are wanting to place an order from the March Scholastic Book Order forms please do so by Monday March 11th 2019.

Monday will be our last day for completing our Google Slides Arctic Animal Research presentation. Practicing typing is a great way to become more efficient and confident when using technology to type up good copies and showcase our learning. Here are a few websites that offer free online typing practice:

Arctic Story Boards

This week we started making Arctic Story Boards. These are graphic organizers that will help us to write an Arctic Story.

After reading many Arctic stories and paying attention to Setting, Characters, Beginning, Problem, Solution, Ending and Messages or Lessons of the Story we are now ready to write our own!

After completing our Story Boards we will be better able to have a clear idea of our story parts in order to be more successful at writing.

Science
Prototype 2

After testing our insulators for 10 minutes, 20 minutes and finally 30 minutes we had to decide if we wanted to add, change or build our insulators differently. Next week we will be testing for 1 hour, 2 hours and finally 2.5 hours and trying to keep our ice frozen for even longer.

We reviewed the principals of Heat Transfer through Convection, Conduction and Radiation.

Step by Step Drawings

Today we practiced and did a good copy drawing of the Arctic Animal that we are researching. We used a step-by step guide to help us improve our drawings.

Next week we will be creating a Ted Harrison Arctic landscape painting and adding our Arctic Animal to our Art Piece. We will then use these as our title page for our Arctic Story and also as a title page slide for our Animal Research Google Slides presentation.

Evergreen Theatre, Building a Prototype, Math Challenge!

Reminder: Book orders are due online or by cheque by Monday March 11th.

Evergreen Theatre

Today we had a performance by Evergreen Theatre in the gym. It was based on the story "The 3 Little Pigs" but it was all about Climate Change and what we can do about it!

We will be talking about Climate Change and Extreme Weather patterns, specifically as it relates to the Arctic, the Arctic Animals and the People of the Arctic.

Designing a Prototype

Today we built our first prototype. Our challenge was to design an insulating device that could keep heat energy out and trap heat energy in so that our ice cube will stay cold and frozen or longer.

Tomorrow we will test our designs and then have a chance on Thursday to re-build, re-design or add to our original designs.

Ask me about the building process. What was the most challenging part of building? Why do I think my design in going to work?

Math Challenge

Today in math we were challenged to figure out the total inventory of an order using a T-chart, base ten blocks, and drawing to organize all of our information and then calculate a total using Rolls and Loose to help.
