SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS
Reinder: Book Orders for May went home today. They are due back or ordered online by May 11.

Science

Today we got to do 2 different experiments to do with Buoyancy!

Question: Can I make a sinker float by changing its shape? Can I make a floater sink by adding weight?

We wrote hypothesis's and then we were ready to TEST!

Ask me what I learned about buoyancy and what new questions I have now after experimenting.

Jump Rope, Landmark Numbers, Acadians and Buoyancy Questions to test!

Reminder: Please send back your Alien-In-Line forms as soon as possible. It is starting next week and we need to have all forms in so that all students are able to participate.

Yesterday an invitation came home for our Volunteer Tea. If you are able to attend please return the portion stating yes or no so we can plan for adequate food and seating.

Jump Rope for Hearth Finale...
Yesterday we had such fun participating in Jump Rope for Heart. We jumped our hearts out!!

Math

We have been talking about using an open number line for subtraction

We also practiced getting to landmark numbers. Landmark numbers help us subtract and add more efficiently and easily!

We practiced answering age difference questions about Carlos, using the number line strategy and filling out the chart we had started at the beginning of the week. Tomorrow we will work on figuring out how old everyone was when Mara what born!

Counting backward by tens, fives and ones is tricky. We have been practicing this. We drew a personal number line from 0-100 and made note of all the landmark numbers.  We then practiced counting back by tens. We remembered that between every decade there are 9 ones.

Social Studies

As we continue learning about Nova Scotia we have started to learn about the Acadian People.

Acadians are people who came over from France many years ago to farm and live in villages in Nova Scotia. They built dikes to prevent their crops from being flooded and were able to filter out the salt water through this system to use the water that washed into their ponds and marshes. In this way, they were very successful farmers.

When French immigrants first settled in Nova Scotia, the land was not farmable because it was salty from the ocean water. They built dikes (a series of dams) to prevent too much water from washing nutrients from the soil.

Ask me what I have learned so far about Acadian People.

On Monday we will have a guest speaker in (our very own Kindergarten teacher Ms. Dixon) to talk about her experience growing up Acadian in Nova Scotia.

Science

From continuing to hypothesis and test a variety of materials to see which ones sink or float or have neutral buoyancy we came up with some questions:

If I put something that floats into the water and then put things that sink inside of it will it still float or will it sink?

Is plasticine/clay buoyant?

If I make a ball with plasticine will it float? If I change the shape of my ball will it float? Does the shape of something matter or help it to float or sink better?

How much cargo can my floating device hold before it sinks?

Tomorrow we will be testing all of these questions out. We will use the Scientific Method:

1. Question
2. Hypothesis
3. Test
4. Observe
5. Conclude

Can you make something that floats sink by adding enough weight?
Does shape matter for floating?

Jump Rope for Heart, Anne of Green Gables, Buoyancy and Nova Scotia!

Reminder: Tomorrow is Jump Rope for Heart day at school. We will be skipping from 1:30-2:30. Please wear red tomorrow. If you have not returned your Jump Rope for Heart envelopes and have raised money please bring them in tomorrow.

Hello! Tomorrow is our Jump Event Day! There are a few things we want you to remember for tomorrow:
1) Wear RED in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation
2) Remember to bring in your pledge collection envelope
3) If you have your own skipping rope, please bring it to school. Don't forget to put your name on it.
4) Get ready to get your hearts pumping and have some fun!
Make sure you eat well and get a good night's sleep so you will have lots of energy for our Jump Day!!

We also want to send out a MASSIVE THANK YOU to Royal Oak Sobeys for donating oranges to our school so we can enjoy a healthy snack after the event. THANK YOU SOBEYS!!!

Literacy

This week we have started reading Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. We are reading the shortened version for kids and a graphic novel of Anne of Green Gables.

We have been visualizing in our heads as Mrs. Lagrana reads and drawing our ideas in our Visual Sketch-Books:

Ask me about the characters so far. Who are they? What are their personalities like? Where is the setting of this story? Do I know where in the world this story is taking place?

Math

In  math we read a book called "Bisabuelo Gregorio". It is about a boy (Carlos) who wants to figure out how old everyone in his family was when he was born.

We were challenged to solve these challenges for Carlos using the strategies we could think of such as number line, t-charts, pictures and equations.

This week we will continue investigating different strategies for subtraction and working together to prove our answers. We are working on showing our math thinking.

In the next few weeks we would like to put together a time line of our own families. In order to do this we need you to send in a completed survey with your child's information:

My Family Survey

Me:
Siblings:
Mom:
Dad:
Grandpa:
Grandma:
Great-Grandpa:
Great-Grandma:

If you want to include pets you can do so!

If you can please send this information into class by Monday April 30th it would be greatly appreciated. Just written on a piece of paper is fine. Your child will then put it into a chart and use this information to answer subtraction and addition questions to figure out age differences between family members and to create a family timeline depicting everyone in their family.

Science
Buoyancy

We have started learning about Buoyancy. We learned that some things sink and some things float.

We experimented with testing out if different objects sink or float. We looked at +Buoyancy, -Buoyancy and Neutral Buoyancy.
Mrs. Lagrana challenged us to try to find something at home that has positive buoyancy, something that has negative buoyancy and something that has neutral buoyancy. Please test this out at home and take a picture or a video or just bring the object into school to share with us!

East Coast-Nova Scotia

We have been learning about Nova Scotia. Yesterday we learned about the geography and land of Nova Scotia including important Bodies of Water.

We watched a time-lapse of the tide coming in and going out at the Bay of Fundy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3LtEF9WPt4

We drew our understanding of these concepts in our Visual Sketch Books:

Today we continued to look at the land of Nova Scotia and learned about their plants and climate

Making a Movie in my Mind, Pyramids and Prisms and Magnetic Inventions!

Reminder: There is NO SCHOOl tomorrow as it is a Professional Development Day.

UPDATE: The Grade 2 Classes raised $500 dollars at our Celebration of Learning last week. Thanks to your generous donations we can now donate this money to helping to save the Polar Bears, through Polar Bears International.

Literacy

Making a Movie in my Mind!

We have been continuing to practice Visualizing as a reading comprehension strategy. The more I am able to make a mental picture in my head about what I am reading the stronger my reading understanding will be.

We practiced reading the poem Green Giant by Jack Prelutsky:

Our job was to highlight all the descriptive words that helped create a picture in our minds.

After we highlighted only the words that helped us make a mental image, we then drew what we had visualized.

You can practice this strategy at home by looking for the descriptive words in the text. Think which of the 5 senses (sight, sound, touch/feel, smell, and taste) is the author using to help create a picture in the readers mind?

We practiced making some of these 3D Shapes using straws, toothpicks, and clay

Today we were challenged to make a house for the three little pigs using some of the 3D shapes we have been learning about. Ask me about my house and what I built:

This is our finished 3 Little Pigs Village!

Ask me which 3D shapes my group used for our house? What worked best? What materials did we use? What would I do differently next time?

We also talked about how it can be difficult to draw 3D shapes. Here is a video that can help you learn some tricks!

Magnetic Inventions:

We have been learning some scientific vocabulary about magnets.

We learned that the Earth is a giant magnet!

We were given the challenge to use magnets to solve a problem:

We then followed the Design Thinking process and generated ideas, shared and began to design a prototype:

Today we continued building our prototypes:
Ask me what my invention is and if it is using the Magnetic Force of Attraction or Repulsion or Both in order to work?
