Making a Movie in my Mind, Pyramids and Prisms and Magnetic Inventions!

Reminder: There is NO SCHOOl tomorrow as it is a Professional Development Day.

UPDATE: The Grade 2 Classes raised $500 dollars at our Celebration of Learning last week. Thanks to your generous donations we can now donate this money to helping to save the Polar Bears, through Polar Bears International.

Making a Movie in my Mind!

We have been continuing to practice Visualizing as a reading comprehension strategy. The more I am able to make a mental picture in my head about what I am reading the stronger my reading understanding will be.

We practiced reading the poem Green Giant by Jack Prelutsky:

Our job was to highlight all the descriptive words that helped create a picture in our minds.

After we highlighted only the words that helped us make a mental image, we then drew what we had visualized.

You can practice this strategy at home by looking for the descriptive words in the text. Think which of the 5 senses (sight, sound, touch/feel, smell, and taste) is the author using to help create a picture in the readers mind?

We practiced making some of these 3D Shapes using straws, toothpicks, and clay

Today we were challenged to make a house for the three little pigs using some of the 3D shapes we have been learning about. Ask me about my house and what I built:

This is our finished 3 Little Pigs Village!

Ask me which 3D shapes my group used for our house? What worked best? What materials did we use? What would I do differently next time?

We also talked about how it can be difficult to draw 3D shapes. Here is a video that can help you learn some tricks!

Magnetic Inventions:

We have been learning some scientific vocabulary about magnets.

We learned that the Earth is a giant magnet!

We were given the challenge to use magnets to solve a problem:

We then followed the Design Thinking process and generated ideas, shared and began to design a prototype:

Today we continued building our prototypes:
Ask me what my invention is and if it is using the Magnetic Force of Attraction or Repulsion or Both in order to work?
