Literacy Week, Math, Science Rotation and Cup Stacking!!

Literacy

This week we have been reviewing how to pick a book that is "just right" for us.

We have been challenged to pick something new and start to expand our reading genres!

We are also doing a book review on a book that we think is so good someone else should read it.

These books will be displayed in our classroom and in our gathering space during next weeks Literacy Week.

Literacy Week

Next week from May 7-11 is Literacy Week at Royal Oak School. There will be lots of fun activities and events that promote a love of reading. We will have an author visit. We will be reading many different books, having book talks and reading other student's book PICKS. On Friday, May 11th, we will celebrate by dressing up as our favorite BOOK character. Here are some choices that we have come up with in class. Feel free to come up with your own. This is meant to be fun and not stressful!

Pete the Cate

Harry Potter or Hermione Granger

Anne of Green Gables

Charlottes Web Characters:

Fly Guy

I SPY

Matilda

Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham

One Fish, Two Fish

There are so many ideas to choose from, these are just a few suggestions that we came up with as a class.

SCIENCE ROTATIONS

DENSITY

We learned that Density=Mass and Volume.
Mass=Weight of an object
Volume=The amount of space inside something

We tested 2 Cans of Pepsi. One was Diet Pepsi and one was Regular. The regular Pepsi sank and the diet Pepsi floated. We learned that this was because the Regular Pepsi was full of sugar and that made it have more mass and therefore it had more DENSITY.

MATH

Today we shared our posters and strategies for solving How Many Years Until Carlos will be _______?

For example: If Mrs. Lagrana is 40 and her son Daniel is 16, in how many years will Daniel be 40?

We looked at the numbers we know already:

We know Danny is 16. We know the final age we are looking for is 40.

We can start at 8 and hop, skip and jump to 40

Or we can start at 40 and move back by hops, skips and jumps to 8

IF we know that our equation is 8+______=40 then we also know our equation could be 40-8=_____

The difference between these numbers will be the same whether you are adding or subtracting.

When adding or subtracting on a number line,  here are some different strategies to try in order to be more efficient.

CUP STACKING 101

Today Ms. Hennick was away and we got to practice Cup Stacking during gym time. It was so much fun we are begging Mrs. Lagrana to let us do it again!
