Editing for Capital Letters, Rules for a Square and Typing our Arctic Story!!

Writing
Editing for Capital Letters:

Today we talked about the importance of editing our writing. We talked about how authors make multiple copies before publishing their work and even after all of those copies they still have an EDITOR check their work for mistakes and suggest improvements.

We talked about Capital Letters. Where do we need them?

We edited as a class a paragraph of writing on the whiteboard.

We made a classroom poster

We then went back to our first copy of our Arctic Story and self-edited for appropriate capital letters.

Tomorrow we will self-edit for Periods. We will be editing our Arctic Stories all week.

MATH
SHAPES and SPACE

Ask me why shapes and space are important. Why do we study them? What jobs use this knowledge?

Today we started a new math unit. We started working on the unit Shapes and Space. We were challenged to build a square using different building materials. We then had to write rules in our book that would explain to others (like Marvy the Martian) how to build one if they had never seen one before!

Many of us found this REALLY hard!

After working as partners, groups and aa a whole class these are the Rules we came up with for a square:

1. All squares have 4 lines

2. All lines are the same length
3. All squares have 4 corners
4. All squares have right angles

Tomorrow we will be building more squares based on these RULES and looking at RECTANGLE RULES!!

What is a Right Angle?

We were challenged to use a different non-standard units from our classroom manipulative's to build a square using the rules we had come up with. Ask me what I noticed. Were some of the non-standard units harder to use than others? Why?

Non-Standard Units of Measurement:

Typing our Arctic Stories...

Today we began typing our Arctic Stories in Google Docs. We are working hard to type up our story so that we have time to edit for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Today our focus was:

1. Opening up a new google doc
2. Naming the document with our name and a title of Arctic Story Writing
3. Typing up our story as much as we could
4. Changing our font size to 14
5. Double spacing our work

we practiced using the keys command and a to highlight by selecting all. This is a fast way to change something to the entire document.

Ask me what the hardest part of typing up a story is?

Over the break practice typing for 20 minutes every day. It really does help to make us quicker, build our typing stamina and can be a great alternative to printing/writing as we get older.
