Book Talks

Over the break, the challenge is to prepare another Book Talk to share in class the first week back to school.

Step 1; READ A BOOK!
Step 2: Create a Google Slides presentation

The layout of Slide Presentation:

1. Title Slide ( Title of Book and Author/Illustrator plus your name by: )
2. Summarize the book (This could be 1 slide or 5)-Just retell the important parts: First, Next, Then, Last and Finally or Who, What, Where, When and Why?
3. What you like about the book and why? Or It is also ok to say you don't like the book but don't forget why? 1 Slide
4. What rating would you give the book out of 5 stars? 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. What is the best part? Or What is the worst part of the book? (1 Slide)

Remember if you are using Google Slides add pictures, add a link to the author's website if they have one, add a small video of the book being read if they have one?

If you are not comfortable using Google Slides and want to create a poster or a diorama you can also choose a different option.

Have FUN!

See you back at school Tuesday, April 3, 2018!

Rectangle Rules, Perimeter and Editing our Arctic Stories!

Reminder: There is no school Friday, March 23rd due to Student-Led Conferences and the beginning of SPRING BREAK! School will resume on Tuesday, April 3rd. Thank you to everyone for booking a conference time. Your child is so excited to share their learning with you Tomorrow evening or Friday during the day!

Math

As we learn about shapes and space we have been learning some new vocabulary!

Quadrilateral

4 sided shapes

Parrallel Lines

Perimeter

We have been practicing building, drawing, labeling and writing a perimeter equation for squares.

We also tried some building challenges to see if we could make different sized squares:

Today we were challenged to come up with Rules for a Rectangle!

Tomorrow we will continue building and labeling squares and rectangles, measuring them using non-standard units and calculating the perimeter of these shapes.

Google Docs: Typing up my Arctic Story!

Today we continued editing for appropriate capital letters. We also began editing for periods at the end of our sentences.
PERIODS:

Some of our stories have lots of DIALOGUE or speaking. Because of this, we have been looking at the use of QUOTATION MARKS. If we don't use quotation marks and more than one character in our story is speaking it can become very hard to understand who is speaking and when:

Editing for Capital Letters, Rules for a Square and Typing our Arctic Story!!

Writing
Editing for Capital Letters:

Today we talked about the importance of editing our writing. We talked about how authors make multiple copies before publishing their work and even after all of those copies they still have an EDITOR check their work for mistakes and suggest improvements.

We talked about Capital Letters. Where do we need them?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo2xZskgdP4

We edited as a class a paragraph of writing on the whiteboard.

We made a classroom poster

We then went back to our first copy of our Arctic Story and self-edited for appropriate capital letters.

Tomorrow we will self-edit for Periods. We will be editing our Arctic Stories all week.

MATH
SHAPES and SPACE

Ask me why shapes and space are important. Why do we study them? What jobs use this knowledge?

http://www.mathscareers.org.uk/article/shapes-space/

Today we started a new math unit. We started working on the unit Shapes and Space. We were challenged to build a square using different building materials. We then had to write rules in our book that would explain to others (like Marvy the Martian) how to build one if they had never seen one before!

Many of us found this REALLY hard!

After working as partners, groups and aa a whole class these are the Rules we came up with for a square:

1. All squares have 4 lines

2. All lines are the same length
3. All squares have 4 corners
4. All squares have right angles

Tomorrow we will be building more squares based on these RULES and looking at RECTANGLE RULES!!

What is a Right Angle?

http://www.mathsisfun.com/rightangle.html

We were challenged to use a different non-standard units from our classroom manipulative's to build a square using the rules we had come up with. Ask me what I noticed. Were some of the non-standard units harder to use than others? Why?

Non-Standard Units of Measurement:

Typing our Arctic Stories...

Today we began typing our Arctic Stories in Google Docs. We are working hard to type up our story so that we have time to edit for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Today our focus was:

1. Opening up a new google doc
2. Naming the document with our name and a title of Arctic Story Writing
3. Typing up our story as much as we could
4. Changing our font size to 14
5. Double spacing our work

we practiced using the keys command and a to highlight by selecting all. This is a fast way to change something to the entire document.

Ask me what the hardest part of typing up a story is?

Over the break practice typing for 20 minutes every day. It really does help to make us quicker, build our typing stamina and can be a great alternative to printing/writing as we get older.

Soapstone Carving

SOAPTSTONE CARVING

Today we were fortunate to have guest teachers into our classroom to teach us about soapstone and it's artistic uses.

https://kids.kiddle.co/Soapstone

We learned that soapstone carving was and is one type of art that Inuit are known for. The images are usually of the land, the people or the animals of the Arctic.

We used rasps, sandpaper and oil to create our own soapstone Inukshuks.

http://icor.ottawainuitchildrens.com/node/51

First we:
Used rasps and water to make all of our edges rounded and soft.

Next we:

Used rasp tools to make a belt and sandpaper to continue smoothing out all of the edges. There were a lot of edges!!

Then we:

Used special sandpaper to make sure all of our lines and scratches were gone and we could see the colour come out. Ask me what colour I noticed after I sanded?

After we used a nail to etch simple patterns into our Inuksuk.

Finally we:
Washed our final inuksuks and used oil to bring back out the colour. We put them in bags to keep them safe until our Celebration of Learning:

We will be selling these soapstone carvings (by donation) at our upcoming Celebration of Learning to raise money for Polar Bears.

Ask me what the hardest part was?
My favorite part?
Why?

MATH We continued our Math Review of double digit addition and subtraction. We reviewed the stacking strategy which we are all becoming experts at:

We also reviewed TRIANGLE math for Addition and practiced 3 more questions using this strategy:

Ask me which strategy I like the best? Why? Have I improved in one strategy this year?

Artist in Residence Final Creation, Musical Interlude, and Arctic Story Lessons and Titles!

Reminder: Tomorrow is our in-class Soapstone Carving. If you have already emailed me that you are coming in to Volunteer thank you in advance and we look forward to your help tomorrow. If you are still interested or able I have had a cancellation and still have space for one or two more just email me at imlagrana@cbe.ab.ca

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Today we completed our final creation with Ms. Natalie (YMCA Artist). It was a very exciting day. We built onto our initial creation by adding a self-portrait. We used mirrors to draw ourselves from whatever angle we wanted and added special details that make us unique. We used oil pastels to colour in our self-portraits and add details.

We then thought about how originally we had only put adjectives that described ourselves. This time we had to add new words that would describe how we have changed from being a part of Royal Oak Community, Royal Oak School and how our community has changed/added to us.

We used gold and silver sharpies to add our new words.

The final part was putting all of our pieces together. This was tricky and challenging but so much fun!!

We now have a finished piece that will be mounted and displayed at our Celebration of Learning in April. It will then move on to live at the Shane Homes Rocky Ridge YMCA. Eventually it will return to Royal Oak School and be a part of our School.

We posted a picture and a reflection in IRIS. Please visit IRIS with me and check it out!

Musical Interlude!

After lunch we had a special guest presentation by a parent who plays the Saxophone. We were able to listen, learn, and ask questions about playing an instrument. Ask me what my favorite part was?

Arctic Story Lessons/Titles

Today we finished writing our first copy of our Arctic Story. We added a lesson at the end that made sense for the problem in our story. We also got to come up with a TITLE! Ask me what my title is.
Tomorrow we will be make a beautiful title page/cover for our Arctic Stories.
