Retelling, Artist in Residence and Writers Toolbox!

Literacy

Today we continued using the strategy of retelling in order to increase our Comprehension of what we are reading.

We used the 5-Finger Retell model or Fist to 5:

See if I can retell you my Home Reading book or a simple book from home. Have me read it to you and then use my Fist to Five strategy to retell what I have just read in my own words. This is a powerful strategy for helping me to understand sequence of events and demonstrate understanding of my reading.

Artist In Residence:
Today we started working with our Artist in Residence. We are looking at the wetlands and the creatures that live in it.

We made lines on watercolour paper to represent:

- a beaver getting trees to make a lodge

-a red winged blackbird flying from cat's tail to cat's tail to make it's nest

-a frog

-a dragonfly

After making all these different lines we then used transparent acrylic paint to add dabs of blue for water, green for the grass and algae and brown for the dirt and mud. We can't wait to see what we get to do on Thursday!

Math Explosions and Comparing Numbers:

We used single and two-digit numbers and exploded them into tens and loose. We had to explain our math thinking about why we broke up our number the way that we did. Our challenge was to see groups of 10s and 5s within our numbers. We will continue this tomorrow.

Writing

Today we listened to the story of "The Three Little Pigs". We were then challenged to write the First, Next, Then, After and Finally of the story in our own words:

We used the Fist to 5 model to help us retell the story
