OPEN MINDS DAY 2!

Calgary Reads Volunteer Training

Royal Oak School is in need of more volunteers for our Calgary Reads programs. Please see the information below about how to volunteer.

Wee Reads
Wee Read is about reading aloud and sharing the joy of reading with Kindergarten and Grade 1 students. Reading volunteers would need to commit to 30 minutes per week for 8 weeks. In this 30 minutes, volunteers will have the opportunity to work with two students either in Kindergarten or Grade 1.
If you are interested in volunteering for this program, a valid police clearance through the CBE is required. Interested volunteers are asked to please attend a Wee Reads training session on Wednesday October 18th from 2:30 - 3:50pm. The training sessions will be offered at Royal Oak School. If you are interested in attending, please contact Sarah Power at sapower@cbe.ab.ca and RSVP by Monday evening, October 16th.

Read Up
The Read Up program helps struggling readers in grades one and two strengthen their reading skills at a critical time in their cognitive development. Volunteers receive advanced training and commit to two 45-minute sessions each week for a total of about 40 sessions. Volunteers must have previously worked as a Wee Read volunteer or have an Education background. Please contact Sarah Power sapower@cbe.ab.ca if you are interested in enrolling in Read Up training with Calgary Reads. The training is approximately 4 hours at the Calgary Reads office.

Today we continued exploring the YMCA. We got to meet a personal trainer and ask them some questions about what they do and how they help to inspire and create CHANGE in other people.

Personal Trainer:

personal trainer is an individual certified to have a varying degree of knowledge of general fitness involved in exercise prescription and instruction. They motivate clients by setting goals and providing feedback and accountability to clients. Trainers also measure their client's strengths and weaknesses with fitness assessments. These fitness assessments may also be performed before and after an exercise program to measure their client's improvements in physical fitness. They may also educate their clients in many other aspects of wellness besides exercise, including general health and nutrition guidelines.
We had many questions for Tyson such as :

How do you build up your speed?
What does a personal trainer do?
What is your favorite sport?
How many hours do you help people become stronger everyday?
What is your favorite thing to do to help train people?
How can I get more flexible, stronger, faster, quicker, more agile?

Terry Fox Run

Today we got to run the Terry Fox Run on the YMCA track. Ask me how many laps of the track I did. Ask me who/what I ran for? How can I make a CHANGE by running?

We used tally marks (one for each lap).

Mrs. Lagrana will send all of our tallies for laps to Ms. Hennick so that we can add our Kilometers to the grand total for Terry Fox.

Today we looked at the CORE values of the YMCA. They are:

We talked about how these Values seems very similar to our CIRCLE of COURAGE values at Royal Oak School:

Generosity, Belonging, Independence and Mastery.

Why is it important to have values?

Zumba and StrongKids!

After meeting a personal trainer we participated in a Yoga class! Ask me what my favorite part of Yoga is and how it makes me feel?

Community Walk
We went on a Community Walk. We had to look for things that let us know if downtown is a Community and what kind of things we could see that would help us understand about this community. We had to look for signs of people, transportation, homes, work and play. Ask me what I noticed?

We walked close to China Town and looked at some monuments there that were telling a story about Chinese Immigrants and some different reasons they came to Canada.
