Reminders, Charlotte's Web, 5-Finger Retell, 10-Frames and ART!

Classroom Volunteers Needed:

I would like to have volunteers coming in on a more regular basis. Sometimes it is to prep art work or put up projects we have been working on. It is also nice to have a parent during our literacy groups Monday-Thursday from 9:45-10:30 to help read with a group of students. Please email me if this is something you might be able to do twice a week, once a week, every other week or even once a month. Every little bit helps.

Important Reminders:

Reminder: We are so excited to begin working with our Artist in Residence next week. She will be working with our class:
 Monday October 23rd from 10:45-11:45
Thursday October 26th from 10:45-11:45
Wednesday November 1st from 10:45-11:45
Tuesday November 7th from 10:45-11:45

The artist in residence has requested that we have 2 parent volunteers in order to have things run smoothly. It would be for about an hour and fifteen minutes to help support the work the students will be doing with her as well as clean up each time.  If you can volunteer all or any of the days please email me at imlagrana@cbe.ab.ca

Reminder:

Royal Oak School is in need of more volunteers for our Calgary Reads programs. Please see the information below about how to volunteer.

Wee Reads
Wee Read is about reading aloud and sharing the joy of reading with Kindergarten and Grade 1 students. Reading volunteers would need to commit to 30 minutes per week for 8 weeks. In this 30 minutes, volunteers will have the opportunity to work with two students either in Kindergarten or Grade 1.

If you are interested in volunteering for this program, a valid police clearance through the CBE is required. Interested volunteers are asked to please attend a Wee Reads training session on Wednesday, October 18th from 2:30 - 3:50 pm. The training sessions will be offered at Royal Oak School. If you are interested in attending, please contact Sarah Power at sapower@cbe.ab.ca and RSVP by Monday evening, October 16th.

Read Up

The Read Up program helps struggling readers in grades one and two strengthen their reading skills at a critical time in their cognitive development. Volunteers receive advanced training and commit to two 45-minute sessions each week for a total of about 40 sessions. Volunteers must have previously worked as a Wee Read volunteer or have an Education background. Please contact Sarah Power sapower@cbe.ab.ca if you are interested in enrolling in Read Up training with Calgary Reads. The training is approximately 4 hours at the Calgary Reads office.

Pumpkinella TIME!!

Charlotte's Web: Chapter 8: A Talk at Home

Today we worked on using the strategy of Re-telling build our reading comprehension. When we read something it is important to be able to tell the story/chapter back in our own words and in the correct sequence that it happened. It is similar to Summarizing but it is not only the most important events that you tell but this time the whole story or chapter.

Literacy

In literacy groups this week we will be using the CAFE strategy of RETELLING in order to explain a story in our own words that we had just read. We will continue using the 5 Finger retell as a organizer for helping us to retell what we have just read.

Math

Today we continued counting our objects, this time practicing putting everything in groups of 10. We practiced drawing and filling in ten frames to represent single and double digit numbers.

We explored ten frames and how they help us to visualize numbers and equations.

We looked at how our brain uses the numbers it knows to make a total. Some people saw the equations:

2+2+2+2=8
5+3=8
6+2=8
10-2=8

Or for:

Some people saw the math equations:

2+2+2+2+1
5+4=9
10-9=1

Tomorrow we will continue to represent our totals in our math books using ten frames.

Art

Today we completed our Urban City Skyline art using water colour markers and a water wash to create mirrored symmetry. We modeled our pictures off of the photos we had taken while downtown at OpenMinds school. We were lucky to get to see the Calgary Skyline everyday from Prince's Island Park.
