Reminder: No school on Monday October 16th, as it is a Professional Development Day.
Reminder: Next week on Wednesday October 18th, it is our class's first time to have a visit from the Calgary Public Library's New Book Truck! We are excited to get to visit the truck and pick out new Public Library Books to practice our reading with!
It is important that you have filled out the blue form that came home at the beginning of the year with your Child's name and Library Card Number. I have a few student's who have their name filled in but no Library Card Number and a few forms that never came back.
If you do not have a number you can register them online at calgarylibrary.ca/card or go into your nearest Community Public Library and they will issue you (at no cost) a library card for your child.
Please then email Mrs. Lagrana imlagrana@cbe.ab.ca the number or write it on a note with your child's name and send it in their Home/Communication folder on Tuesday so they can participate in this exciting new program!
Literacy
Today we worked on using the strategy: Make a mental picture
This strategy helps us to remember important parts of the story. The picture we create in our head helps us to remember more of the story. Then when we have finished reading, or listening to reading we can look back at the picture we created in our head to remember more of what happened in the story.
Math
Today we watched each other explain our strategies for Organizing our materials and had to explain to the class how our strategy for counting helped us to find a total. Some of us counted our totals one by one, some by 2's, some of us counted by 10's, and some of us counted by 5's. We talked about the concept of EFFICIENCY in math. When we first started organizing on Monday, many of us thought sorting our objects by colour would help us to count, or by shape. When we tried to find our totals we had very large numbers like 57+57+57+57+57 and no idea how to solve these double digit addition equations.
Yesterday we had a second chance to change how we were organizing our objects after reminders that our goal was to get a TOTAL of all the objects in our bins. Mosts of us then changed our strategy for how we were going to organize in a way that would help us to count more efficiently.
Efficiency=Doing something quickly, without wasting time. operating or working in a way that gets results, with little wasted effort.
EFFICIENT=Faster, Quicker, Easier
As a class we decided that out of all of the methods we had shared, counting by tens seemed to be the fastest, easiest and most EFFICIENT.
We were then challenged to write an addition math equation for our objects, in order to prove how we got our totals.
Equation=10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+7=157
Ask me which way I ended up organizing my objects today and why I think it was a more efficient way to organize. How did my new way help me to figure out a TOTAL?
We also talked about ACCURACY. We noticed that when we were skip counting by 5's or 10's and we had a very large total such as 257 or 495 it was very easy to make a mistake by double counting or missing a bag. We practiced today recounting making sure we were careful, accurate and clear about which bags we had counted. We decided that we should also double check to see if we got the same TOTAL both times.
Ask me what happened when we double-checked our TOTALS?
Inquiry
Our Communities...
Today we did an I see, I think, I wonder. We looked at the above picture and started to discuss our wonders, questions and ideas about it. We looked at the definitions of:
Urban, Suburban and Rural
Ask me what kind of Community Royal Oak is? What about the community of downtown Eau Claire? What about Okotoks, High River or Cochrane?
Today we read chapter 6 of Charlotte's Web: Summer Days
Ask me what mental picture I created in my head, from listening to this chapter.
Please follow along at home if you missed it. You can also go back to Monday's blog to listen to Chapter 1-4.
