Readers Response:

Today we read chapter 21 of Charlottes Web: The Last Day. We wrote a chapter summary with the most important parts of the chapter. We used the model:

FIRST
THEN
NEXT
LAST

Ask me how I think Wilbur felt at the end of this chapter and why?
Ask me how I felt at the end of the chapter and why?

Writing
We read the book "The Best Part of Me" by Wendy Ewald. It uses photography and words to describe what children think is the best part of themselves and why? We took a picture of our favourite body part and are writing about it. Ask me what I think that the best part of me is and why?

SCIENCE
Today we continued using the computers to research insects and create a Google Slide presentation that will include important information, pictures and diagrams about:
1. Habitat
2. Diet
3. Predators
4. Appearance
5. Life Cycle
6. Interesting Facts

We talked about how to add pictures, text, background, and links to our Google Slides. We also talked about how to make our slides transition with a FADE or a FLIP or a CUBE. Ask me to show you my work so far

Sports Day Reminder!

Sports Day - Thursday afternoon students at Royal Oak School will be participating in our annual Sports Day. Our theme for this year will be 'Your Favourite Sports' so we are asking students to wear a jersey of their favourite sports team or a t-shirt with their favourite sport on it for that day. We are also encouraging all students to bring a water bottle. After our events in the afternoon students will be treated to a snack of watermelon provided by parent council.

You can also wear your own Jersey or Uniform from an activity or sport that you participate in

You can also wear your ROS SPIRIT WEAR:

Hello parents!  What a gorgeous week it promises to be, and a fabulous day for our upcoming Sports Day at the school on Thursday!  We would love to see a sea of Royal Oak Blue on our students for this fun day.  Royal Oak School Fundraising Society has a limited number of all sizes of tshirts and hoodies still available.  Perhaps you ordered a hoodie, but now your child would like to have a tshirt for Sports Day?  Or maybe they have a tshirt, but those cool morning bike rides to school are begging for a hoodie!
If you would like to order an additional tshirt or hoodie for your child, or even for yourself (my husband will be wearing his tshirt to volunteer on Thursday!), please send in your order as soon as possible.  We will go in on Wednesday and distribute any orders, so your children will have them to wear on Thursday.  Note, Royal Oak Spirit Wear is NOT mandatory for any student to have, it is simply a fun way to show school spirit for our awesome school!
Please find the order form attached, to be printed and sent in with payment.  Thank you.
ALSO, Royal Oak School Fundraising Society is meeting this Wednesday, May 31st at 7pm at Cafe Fresco to plan our 2017/2018 School Year.  We will be looking at setting up a fundraising calendar for the year.  If you would like to help us plan, have a proposal or idea for us, or would just like to be informed, please join us!  We would love to have you!  Please note, you do not need to be available to volunteer with us on an ongoing basis in order to join us on Wednesday evening.  Of course, we would however LOVE to have you join us next year!

Wishing you a sun filled, glorious week.  Thank you again for your ongoing support!

Bugs, Grandma Eudora and Toilet Paper!!!

SPORTS DAY!!
Reminder: Sports Day is this Thursday June 1st. Please make sure to send your child in appropriate clothing and running shoes that day as weather permitting it will be outdoors in the afternoon. Also please send a water bottle, a hat and sunscreen as needed.

SCIENCE

Students were challenged (in groups) to accurately build an insect they imagined out of recycled material that would have the 5 physical attributes of a bug. Here's a few samples of their work!

MATH

We have begun Grandma Eudora's T-Shirt Factory Inquiry in Math. The purpose of this inquiry will be a summative review of double-digit addition and subtraction strategies students have developed over this school year. The main strategy will be 'stacking', otherwise known as the traditional algorithm where the focus is on regrouping large numbers and understanding place-value.

TOILET PAPER AND NEWSPAPER!
Paper Mache Insects

We will be attempting to create these amazing, large, 3D bumble bees out of paper mache! In order to facilitate this, we are asking students to each bring in 1 full roll of toilet paper and any extra newspaper you may have around the house. If you are interested in volunteering in our classroom this Friday or the next, that would be wonderful. Please let me know!

If you are in choir please come dressed in a white shirt and black pants.

Tomorrow we have Circle Fridays for the second week. Ask me what I'm excited about for Circle Friday?

Reminder: BOOK ORDERS ARE DUE FRIDAY JUNE 2

Charlottes Web: Chapter 20: The Hour of Triumph

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvaOx5Xgjig

New Vocabulary Words:

Humble
Modest
Languish
Triumph

Science
Today we got to make our Bug Creations. We used our group poster/design and then used plasticine and numerous materials to create our invention!

We also had to reflect on when working in a group how did we decide whose ideas to include for which part of the bug? How did we make our decisions as a group? Do we like working in groups and does it help us with our work or not? Why or why not?
Ask me what I prefer and why?

Tomorrow we will take pictures of our creations and upload it to IRIS.

Dress in your favorite western attire and come with an appetite!

Today we read chapter 19 of Charlottes Web: The Egg Sac

We listened to Chapter 19
Please listen at home if you were not here or if you would like to hear it again with mom and dad:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJgvyBSUfLM

Tomorrow we will draw and answer these comprehension questions:

We went outside today for an outside classroom! We listened to Charlottes web on the grass and then enjoyed some tag games. As the weather gets warmer gym and break and sometimes even class time will be spent outdoors. It is so nice to learn in the sunshine!

Science

Today we learned about an insects body parts. These 5 body parts are important.

All insects have three main body regions: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen.
  • The Head. The main visible parts on the head are the large compound eyes, the antenna (feelers), and the mouthparts. ...
  • The Thorax. The thorax is the middle region of the body, and it bears the legs and wings--if wings are present. ...
  • The Abdomen.

They can also have antennae, legs, wings and compound eyes, depending on the type of insect that they are:

They aslo have an exoskeleton: This means that their skeleton is on the outside of their bodies.

The students were then challenged with creating their own insect. It could have a superpower and something in its body that would serve a purpose such as helping it survive better or helping the environment in some way. Tomorrow we will get to work in groups to come up with a SUPERBUG that will have the best parts of all of our creations. Ask me what I created?

Spider Web Words, Community Comparisons and Reading like a Researcher!

Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser - Update

THANK YOU for helping to make our Heart and Stroke Jump Rope for Heart event a success! Our online total is $10,203 and we are still waiting for our cash donations to be totaled. Congratulations Students, family and friends, we smashed our goal of $5000. Based on our online totals alone, we are one of the top fundraisers in the city.

Jump Rope for Heart has informed me that they will have all totals completed by the end of the week and they will then submit the order for student prizes. As soon as I get another update, I will let you know.

Thanks again for your unbelievable support in this amazing cause. I am very proud to be a part of such a supportive and giving community.

Charlottes Web
Making Spider Webs and Choosing a word for Wilbur:

Today we read chapter 17: Uncle and Chapter 18: The Cool of the Evening in our Charlottes Web Novel Study. If you would like to follow along or re-listen to this chapter at home just follow this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLOsVUMlnl4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2NArClKzD8

We learned some new vocabulary words. Charlotte is starting to move WEARILY and be LISTLESS and she is beginning to look SWOLLEN. We talked about what each of these words meant and used some synonyms to understand what kind of a description the author was trying to create.

Ask me what my word was for my web and why I chose it?

Social Studies

Today we continued comparing the 3 Canadian Communities of Iqaluit, Nunavut, Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia and Calgary, Alberta.

We are looking at things like:

  •  geography/land
  •  culture/traditions
  •  resources and landmarks
  •  languages and population,
  • transportation and food
  • people/jobs
We are looking at similarities and differences between these distinct Canadian Communities.

Ask me what I think are some of the biggest differences between these communities and what are some things that are the same?

Science

We have been research an insect and practicing Reading like a Researcher or Reading like a Scientist. We have to pay attention to text features like headings, bold print and diagrams so that we can figure out what is important to take notes about and what not to.

We are collecting information about:
  • Diet
  • Appearance
  • Interesting Facts
  • Habitat
  • Life Cycle
  • Predators
Next week we will be using the websites to add to our book research and we will be making a booklet and a google slides presentation about our insect. If you have a book at home about your insect or information you would like to bring into class please feel free to do so.

Math

Prisms:  A solid object with two identical ends and flat sides: • The sides are parallelograms (4-sided shape with opposites sides parallel) • The cross section is the same all along its length. The shape of the ends give the prism a name, such as "triangular prism"

https://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/prisms.html

Pyramids: a shape or structure with a polygon for its base and three or more triangles for its sides which meet to form the top. All pyramids have a top point (apex).
