Reading
Yesterday and today we read Scaredy Squirrel books. Scaredy Squirrel is scared of everything and makes lots of lists, charts, diagrams and plans in order to help figure out the scary world! We read:
Ask me what Scaredy Squirrel always does when he gets really scared and his plans are not working?!
Math
In math we have continued working on adding to our Strategies booklets in order to always have a way to solve an addition or a subtraction math problem. Some ways we reviewed yesterday and today are:
WORD PROBLEMS
When I see a word problem it helps to have a checklist of things to do to help remember all of the steps:
1. Read the Problem
2. Figure out the important parts I need to solve the problem (am I adding or subtracting? what numbers do I know?
3. Organize my math thinking (charts, tables, pictures)
4. Pick a strategy (number line, hundreds chart, ten frames, stacking, rainbow math, triangle math etc)
5. Write an equation for what I am trying to solve
6. Solve the problem-show all of my math thinking
7. Double check my work (maybe try another strategy to see if I get the same answer)
8. Write a statement or math sentence that answers the word problem
Today we used this checklist and reviewed the open number line as a strategy to solve a subtraction problem.
PROBLEM:
Mr. Bumbles had 70 candies. He ate 47 of them. How many candies did he have left?
Ask me to show you how I solved this problem using the open number line. Make sure that I follow all the steps for word problems above.
Charlotte's Web Book Report
We have been working hard on our book reports for Charlotte's Web. Some of us are doing mini-paper bag booklets, some are doing flip-flap folder book reports, some are doing dioramas and some are doing a Google Slide presentation.
We are enjoying being creative in how we show what we know/learned about the characters, setting, problem, main events and feelings we felt from this story.
