Thinking Notes, Math Skip Counting on a number line, and Designing Water Filters!

Reminders: Tomorrow is our Remembrance Day Assembly at 10:15 am. Please feel free to wear your uniform if you are in scouts, brownies, sparks etc. 

Today we continued talking about Remembrance Day and what we are remembering. We talked about why people wear the poppy and made cut out poppies to decorate our gym with for the Assembly.

We also read a book by Todd Parr called "The Peace Book" We talked about what peace means to us. Ask me what I think Peace is.....

Thinking  Notes!

Today we continued Reading like Scientists. We read a new science article about Contaminants. This time instead of using a highlighter we made Thinking Notes. 

We practiced making these Thinking notes on our articles as we read them with our reading groups. These Thinking Notes then helped us to come to the carpet and share about something from the reading. Ask me what I shared today? 

We also continued practicing re-reading the article out loud in order to improve our Fluency (how we sound when we read). 

These Thinking Notes can also help us if we are reading to an audience because they help us remember to make our voice interesting for the parts we liked, add expression to our reading and give us hints about tricky parts of the reading that we still need to figure out and practice more. 

Math
We also practiced skip counting on an open number line. 

Hop=10
Skip=5
Jump=Extras

We had to make up numbers and act out the hops, skips and jumps of a secret number and our partner then had to guess what our number was using 10's, 5's and extras to help them count. 

We practiced showing double digit numbers on an open number line by doing our hops (10s), skips (5s) and jumps (1s ) to get to our number.

Writing
Today we continued our HOW TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH instructional writing. We were challenged to add some new transition words into our writing and use ordinal number to 8th:

Designing a Water Filtration Device!

Today we continued working on designing a water filter device. We looked at how some simple water filters work:

We reviewed the different materials we have tested for helping us to improve our dirty waters TURBIDITY. 

Next week we will begin using these materials to create our very own water filter.
