Literacy:
This week we are working on the strategy:Understanding and recognizing Character Feelings in a story. Understanding how character's in the story are feeling at different times in the story and why is an important reading comprehension strategy.
Yesterday we talked about feelings and discussed some different feelings we could infer from some pictures in a text.
Today we read Chapter 21 of Charlotte's Web:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVg1_GYaW9o
Ask me what Wilbur was feeling in this Chapter. In one chapter a character can be feeling many emotions. Which ones did Wilbur feel on this Last Day?
Ask me how I felt at the end of this Chapter and Why?
Why is Templeton doing in this picture? Why? Did he want to do it at first? How did Wilbur convince Templeton to help him?
Tomorrow we will read the last chapter of the novel. We are so excited to then go and see the story come to life up on Stage! We can't wait to see the character's up close and see if they look the same as they do in our heads!
Math NUMBER LINE and HUNDREDS CHARTS: ADDING FROM THE BIGGER NUMBER!!
Yesterday and today we continued using a Hundred's Chart to add 10 (hops), 5 (jumps) and ones (jumps) to a number. Our goal is to be able to start adding from the bigger number instead of always starting at zero because it is much more EFFICIENT.
We looked at the pattern we saw happening on the 100s chart when we added 10s
Everytime we added 10 more we had to move down on the chart and write an equation. For exmple 35+10=45
45+10=55
55+10=65
You can practise adding 10's and 5's and 1's at home using this interactive hundreds chart:
Today we continued seeing patterns on the hundreds chart when we add 10's and 5's and 1's but this time we added the number line back into our work. We had an equation such as:
17+10
We had to determine the bigger number and find it on the hundreds chart:
We then had to build it on the open number line:
Then it was time to add our tens and our ones by hopping, skipping or jumping on the open number line:
After that we practised solving double digit addition equations using the 100s chart and the open number line as our strategies:
Remember: Start at the Bigger Number!
Remember: Adding tens means me move down on the 100s chart!
Remember: Look for friendly numbers!
Instructional Writing Brainstorming Bubbles!!
Today we brainstormed a new set of steps for instructional writing practise. We used a mind map to draw a seperate picture for each of the 8 steps. We reviewed ordinal numbers so that we could decide which step happended 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and finally 8th!
This time we got to think of a sport or activity that we wanted to write 'How To' instructions for....
Ask me what activity I chose and why?
Building our Water Filters!!
Today was our first day of building our Water Filters. We came up with a final design yesterday based on the materials we had brought in or were able to use at school. We had to think like an INVENTOR and use a detailed, labeled diagram to explain our design idea.
Today we began constructing our filters. We had to use things like duct tape, scissors, rubber bands and glue to make sure everything would stay together!! Ask me what the most difficult part has been so far? We will have one more day to create: Friday November 24th.
Next week we will get to test our filters and see if they work.
