Cause and Effect, Number Line Practise, How to Writing and Science Experiments

Yesterday a field trip form came home for the upcoming ATP field trip to see Charlotte's Web. Please fill out and return in a timely manner. All forms should be in by Thursday November 16th in order for teachers to prepare for the upcoming field trip.

I will require two volunteers for this field trip for November 23rd. Please email me if you are interested in volunteering. I can only take two so it will be on a first contact basis:

Reminders

Literacy

This week we will be focusing on the Literacy Cafe strategy of Cause and Effect. We will be looking at the What Happened in the story and the Why?

We used picture books in our Literacy Circles to try to find Cause and Effect examples.

This is a great comprehension strategy and helps us think about what we are reading.

Math

Yesterday in math we continued working on building numbers on the number line. We practiced using hops, skips and jumps to act out a number and then draw and write on a number line to reflect the number that we had just acted out:

We were then challenged to create a number in our group that would have hops, skips and jumps in it. Then after we acted it out we had to create it on our mini-white boards and in our math books.

Today we looked at solving a simple addition problem using a number line. We practiced getting to the first number using our hops, skips and jumps and then from that number continuing to add the next number to our number line. Friendly numbers help us to hop, skip and jump more efficiently!

Here is a link for some skip counting practise!

Writing

We have continued working on our How To Brush Your Teeth. This week we were challenged to use ordinal numbers and to ensure that we added in some new transitional words:

Ask me what new words I chose to use this time?

Science Water Experiments

We have been exploring the concepts of Absorbency and Repelling as well as Soluble and Solvent. Yesterday we had to test 5 materials to see if they would Absorb or Repel Water:

We tested Cotton Balls, Tinfoil, Paper Towel, Sponges and Plastic

We noticed that when the material repelled the water the water made little balls or domes on top of the material or ran off of the material.

We also noticed that when the water was absorbed by the material it seemed to disappear.

We used our new information to add to or change our initial water filter designs. Ask me what I changed or added to my design idea?
