Student Centered Conferences, Charlotte's Web Cause and Effect, Leaping Number Line and Potable Water

Reminder: Tonight is Student-Centered Conferences. Please bring your child with you for this evening or tomorrow day (whenever your scheduled appointment time is) as they have worked hard this week in preparing for your visit and are so excited to share their learning artifacts and processes with you when you come.

There is no School Friday November 17th due to these Conferences.

Information about POLAR EXPRESS night from PRATT:

*****Please remember to bring in your filled out field trip forms if you have not done so already. We go to the performance on Thursday November 23rd and need to ensure all forms have been photocopied and are ready prior to going.

WDPratt’s GSA is presenting The Polar Express on Wednesday December 13. Our Gender & Sexuality Alliance is using this event as a fund raiser to purchase a button maker for the school. We would like to invite families to join us for a movie and a bake sale. As well, there will be “craft tables” available for “purchase” for adults or students to sell crafty things (artwork, jewellery, soap, etc). This will be a perfect opportunity to buy stocking stuffers or other items for the holidays, however you celebrate them. This is a great opportunity to build community spirit and awareness of diversity issues and equal rights. Everyone is welcome. It will be a bring your own pillow and blanket event. There will be more information (including a promotional poster for you to post in the school) coming shortly. Donations will be gratefully accepted at the door for the movie and proceeds from the bake sale will be going towards the purchase of the button maker and supplies for future use. We are very excited to have the opportunity to create new relationships and build community with you.

Literacy
Cause and Effect: Charlottes Web
Today we continued trying to identify cause (why) and effect (what) in our reading. We used  important parts of Charlottes Web to see if we could figure out the Cause and the Effect relationships.

We also read some text and were challenged to underline or circle the CLUE words and figure out the WHY and the WHAT.

Yesterday we finished reading Chapter 20: The Hour of Triumph. We only have 2 chapters left. Ask me why Wilbur and Charlotte ended up being Triumphant?

Can you think of a CAUSE and EFFECT from this Chapter?

Math

Yesterday and today we were using the number line to hop, skip and jump to add two double--digit numbers together. We looked at how we can hop, skip and jump by Friendly numbers to add two numbers together.

We also looked at what happens when we add hops (tens) from a random number :

17+23=

Today we built 17 first. We hopped 10, 5 and then 2. We then knew that we needed to hop from 17 by another 2 tens but hoping by 10's from a random number can be tricky!

We looked at a hundreds chart:

We used a T-chart to show what was changing in the tens and what was changing in the ones when we skip count by 10's.

Ask me what I noticed about the tens? Did they change every time I added a new hop?

Ask me what I noticed about the ones? Did they change every time I added a new hop?

Tomorrow we will look at what happens with Skips (5's) and if we see a pattern?

We can't wait to share out math addition strategies with you at Student-Centered Conferences!!

POTABLE WATER?

We have been looking at some images of water that we were surprised to find out comes from Canada. Some people in Canada do not have access to safe Potable water.

We looked at pictures and did I see, I think, I wonder about the pictures....

Ask me what I see...
what I think....
what I wonder...

Today we talked about how the pictures made us feel?
How can we change things?
What are we still wondering about or what new questions do we have from looking at the pictures?

We were challenged with trying to shut off our water for 1 hour. At home if we shut off our water for 1 hour what will we not be able to do??
