Royal Oak School Stampede Pancake Breakfast!
We are excited to announce that the Calgary Stampede Downtown Attractions Breakfast Committee will be hosting a free Stampede Pancake Breakfast for our entire school community and their families on Friday, May 24, 2019. This event will begin at 7:00 a.m. rain or shine and will run until approximately 9:00 a.m. Families are encouraged to come early to enjoy this free yummy event.
This year we are excited to partner with William D. Pratt Middle School and will be bringing the communities together on the basketball courts and the Pratt soccer fields. Families are invited to bring a blanket or camping chair to sit on as they enjoy a breakfast picnic on the basketball courts and the adjacent Pratt fields. In the event of rain families will be invited inside the gym at W.D. Pratt School.
There will be no teacher supervision provided at the Stampede Pancake Breakfast, so families are responsible for the supervision of their children for the entirety of the event. Our teachers will resume their regular supervision on the school grounds at 8:55am and our regular school bell will ring for student entry at 9:10 am.
All families are encouraged to wear their best western attire to show their Stampede spirit!
Literacy
In reading groups we have started reading about 3 important groups of people in Nova Scotia.
The Acadians
The Mi'kmaq First Nations
The Scottish People
We are reading to learn about their culture from the past to present day and how it influences the Country of Nova Scotia. We make think-marks as we read. After reading about one of these groups of people in reading groups we are then answering inferring questions about what we have read. Next week we will present our findings as a group during literacy.
Math
Ask me why shapes and space are important. Why do we study them? What jobs use this knowledge?
We started with a square and were challenged to prove how we knew something was one or not. We came up with a set of rules for squares.
Today we were challenged to draw one using using the class rules and measure its sides using non-standard and standard units.
Tomorrow we will be challenged to use someone else's measurements and recreate different squares in our math book. We must make sure we label all of the parts of our squares.
After working as partners, groups and aa a whole class these are the Rules we came up with for a square:
1. All squares have 4 lines
2. All lines are the same length
3. All squares have 4 corners
4. All squares have right angles

Density
We have been talking about Density. Yesterday we were challenged with the question of why some items that seem big (cardboard piece) can float and some items that seem that seem small (paperclips) sink. We tested a variety of materials and learned about Density and how it effects Buoyancy.

We also learned that salt water affects Density. Salt water is more dense than fresh water and this affects its Buoyancy.
