Literacy, Triangles and Boat Testing!

Reminders:
There is NO SCHOOL tomorrow Friday May 17th or Monday May 20th!

Next week on Thursday May 23rd,  we are walking to the wetlands to explore small, crawling and flying animals. If you are able to volunteer from 1-2:15 pm and accompany us on this walk, where we will be doing some water testing, please email imlagrana@cbe.ab.ca to let me know. We require 2 volunteers in order to go on this exciting adventure!

Our author visit during literacy week (Pamela McDowell) was so great and many of the students and teachers have expressed interest in ordering some of her books. She is giving us a great deal of purchasing her books at only $7.00 per book. The titles available are:

Bats in Trouble

Salamander Rescue
Ospreys in Danger

She will also autograph each book ordered. If your child expressed an interest they will be bringing home an order form in their Home Communication folder or backpacks. Please fill out and send in the orders by Tuesday May 21st.

Literacy

We have continued building or Comprehension skills by using the strategy: I can find cause-and-effect relationships in the text, using clue words.

In your Home Communication folder is a graphic organizer for you to use to continue practicing this strategy with your Home Reading books or just right library books.

Mathematics

This week we have been investigating properties of a triangle. We have studied 3 different types of triangles:

Triangles

We practiced building them, drawing them and finally measuring them using non-standard and standard units. We compared the Perimeter of these different types of triangles and contrasted the two measurements of Perimeter for each triangle (standard and non-standard units).

Ask me which triangle I prefer to build or which one I found the trickiest and why?

 Boat Testing

Today we finished testing or second prototypes of the perfect East Coast boat! Our self-assessment rubric got a little bit harder now that we know so much more about Boats and Buoyancy!

Ask me how my boat did this time:

What worked better and why?
What do I need to think about for next time? Why?
