Literacy, Entomologist Visit and STEM Bin Challenge!

Literacy

This week we are working on the COMPREHENSION strategy of Retelling after we read.

Being able to Re-tell the important parts of what we have read help us to understand the text more deeply.

We practiced using the Fist to Five or Five Finger Retell to help guide us when retelling:

We practiced using this strategy to retell the familiar fairy tale of The 3 Little Pigs.

As we gain practice we will move onto different stories, using the Retelling strategy to help us remember and sequence what we have read.

Entomologist Visit!

Today we were lucky to have an expert entomologist vist us at Royal Oak School. We got to explore so many insect artifacts and learn about this exciting discipline. We were so fortunate to have Dr. Fry visit us from Olds College.

He spoke to us about the importance of insects. He also spoke about how some are helpful and some are harmful.

He brought in many museum boxes so that we could see the specifmens and species of different insects up close.

Later we sketched and labled what we remembered most. Ask me what I still want to know more about?

We talked about the different classifications of Insects/Bugs such as:

STEM BIN CHALLENGE

Today we were challenged to build an insect habitat. We had to work in a group to come up with a perfect habitat/home for a bug/insect of our groups choice. Ask me what insect my group chose and what home I think they need.

We used our Design Books to draw our ideas and later in the week a new layer will be added to the challenge that will force us to adapt, change, or redesign in some way.
