Predicting, Temperature and Thermometers, Landmark Numbers

Reminder: There is NO SCHOOL tomorrow Feb 1st as this is a day in lieu of Remembrance Day.

Literacy

This week in Literacy we are working on making predictions.

This strategy will help me have a deeper understanding of what I am reading.

We read a short story and had to make predictions Before, During and After Reading.

Parent Pipeline

Temperature and Thermometers

This week we continued to practice reading a thermometer.

This week we experimented and made hypothesis's about temperature of water at different levels of heat. We had to use the thermometer and take the temperature of the water. From the temperatures we had to figure out which water was hot, which was cold and which was warm.

We brainstormed some other things that we would like to take the temperature of.

Next week we will go outside and within other areas of the school to measure more temperatures!

Ask me what I would like to record the temperature of?

Landmark Numbers and Decades

Today we continued working with Decades and figuring out which decade a number would fall between and where the number would be put on the number line, knowing which 2 decades it was between:

We then practiced using open number lines to add 2 double-digit numbers together.

This is different than when we looked at how many numbers were in-between a bigger number and a smaller number. This time we can just start at the most efficient number and add our jumps, skips and hops to get a total.

Inuit Artifacts, Sky Sisters, Estimating on a number line

Reminder: If you are still wanting to donate for the Grade 2 Recipe book and recieve the link to download you have until this upcoming Thursday January 31st to do so. Also we have lots of room left in the Calgary Food Bank Donations boxes and would love to see them filled up before the end of the week.

Inquiry
Inuit Artifacts

Today we finished looking at many different Inuit Artifacts. Our job was to sketch, label and write 2 I thinks and 1 I wonder about what we were looking at.

Today we got to share with the other groups and then find out if our predictions were correct.

We looked at the actual Inuktitut word for the artifact, what it was or is used for today, and what it was made out of.

Later we will add water colour to our sketches.

Ask me which one I remember the most or enjoyed looking at, exploring, and sketching?

Sky Sisters

Yesterday we read an Arctic story about two sisters called Sky Sisters by Jan Waboose

We then figured out some important things about the story through drawing, reflecting and taking some notes:

-title
-author
-characters
-setting
-important part or problem
-solution
-magic
-final lesson or message of the story

Number Line

We worked on solving number line addition problems using jumps, skips and hops. We practiced writing equations to go with the number line in order to add up a total at the end.

How many numbers are there between two numbers? We have been exploring this all week using steps:
1: Draw the number line and place your smaller number on the left and your larger number on the right at the end.
2. Use jumps, skips and hops to get to the larger number.
3. Make sure you are adding as you go after each jump, skip or hop at the bottom of the number line so that you don't lose track.
4. Write an addition equation to figure out how many jumps, skips and hops that you did. Remember do not add the number you started at as you are already there!
5. Solve your addition equation. Be efficient. Group together all your 10's first, then your 5's. Did you use friendly numbers? Landmark numbers?

Reminders, Temperature and Goals in IRIS!

Reminders:

Thank you for attending our Celebration of Learning and making it such an outstanding evening! So far we have raised over $400 dollars for the Calgary Food Bank. If you did not have a chance to attend or you were not able to donate last night we will accept donations right up until next week Thursday January 31st. Also food donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted right up until Thursday January 31st.

SKATING
January 25, 2019

Hello Parents and Guardians!

The Royal Oak School Physical Education department is pleased to provide you with the opportunity to join us for an evening of Ice Skating. Please join us on either Tuesday, February 5th or Thursday, February 7th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Royal Oak Community outdoor rink. We will have skates and helmets available to borrow from the Skate Shack. There will be music, hot chocolate and coffee. We hope to see you there!

Kid Sport Calgary has generously donated the use of their Skate Shack, which is a trailer full of skates! The skate shack will provide us with child, youth and adult skates as well as helmets. You will need to sign out the equipment with one of our volunteers. All persons on the ice during this time will be required to wear a helmet and the equipment will be available on a “first come, first served basis.”

All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. School staff will not be supervising this event. If a child is coming with an adult other than their parent/guardian, they would not be able to participate unless they have a written note from their parent/guardian indicating that another parent/guardian will supervise them for this activity.

We are looking for volunteers to help setting up the music, managing the skate shack (handing out and bringing in the equipment). Also, assistance is needed attending to the hot beverage area. If you are available to volunteer, please email our volunteer coordinator, Niki at ROSvolunteers@gmail.com.

Thank you for supporting the Physical Education program and I hope to see you all soon!

Helen Hennick
ROS Physical Education Specialist

Temperature

Today we started talking about temperature. We looked at the weather in Calgary and compared it to the weather in Iqaluit. We learned how to read the weather and that the unit of measurement is degrees celsius.

We also looked at how to read a thermometer.

https://www.mathsisfun.com/measure/thermometer.html

Next week we will use thermometers and do some science experiments about measuring and predicting temperatures of some hot and cold things!

IRIS GOALS

Today we updated our IRIS goal and strategy. We looked at something that we wanted to improve on and that we could build our MASTERY at or our INDEPENDENCE at. Please ask me to show you IRIS and what I am going to work on over the next few months.

Literacy, Book Truck, Snow Globe Writing and more!

Literacy

This week we have been looking for new and interesting words when we read. We are making note of words that sound interesting but that we are unsure of what they mean. We are practicing using the dictionary to define these words, use them in a sentence all in order to continue to expand our vocabulary and become better readers.

We read an article about the Arctic.

We had to circle any interesting and unknown words.

We then used a graphic organizer to help us understand one of our chosen words more deeply:

We were also introduced to a great website for helping us to come up with synonyms if we are not sure of any or need some examples:

Tomorrow is BOOK TRUCK! We are excited to finally get another turn at this and pick out an exciting new book from the Calgary Public Library!

Snow Globe Writing
Today we continued writing using the snow globe book as inspiration for our own snow globe adventure. We came up with as many descriptive words as we could, using the 5 senses as a guide. These words will help us to write a descriptive paragraph about our snow globe.
Ask me what I am going to be doing in my snow globe?

What does it feel like inside?
What does it look like? Shape, color, size, design?

As we complete our descriptive paragraph we will be using a rubric and class written examples to help us self-assess our work:

Writing, Celebration of Learning and Book Order Reminders

We will be doing some descriptive writing, imagining that we are inside of a winter snow globe. We read the book "The Snow Globe Family" by Jane O'Connor. We drew a picture of our snow globe and imagined what we would be doing in our snow globe. If you have a snow globe at home to bring in and share, in order to help us generate more descriptive words that would be greatly appreciated. It will be sent right back home tomorrow after school.

Literacy, Timeline Math, Final Reflection

Literacy

We have continued to work on Expanding our Vocabulary by making note of words we do not understand and then practicing using a dictionary both books and online websites.

When we come across a word we do not know sometimes we can figure it out by reading the whole sentence and thinking what would make sense here?

When that does not work we can also ask our friends and the teacher in our reading groups.

Another strategy is to use a hard copy dictionary or an online dictionary to help us figure out the meaning, the pronunciation, and to see some examples of the word used in sentences.

Here are some online sites to try at home:

https://www.dictionary.com/

https://www.merriam-webster.com/

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/paint

Timeline Math

Today we finished building our 1800s Important Calgary/Alberta Dates. Ask me what some of the dates are on my timeline?

Today we were posed the challenge of taking two timeline dates and finding out how far apart they are from each other using a number line and Jumping, Skipping and Hopping between the two numbers.

First: Plot my smaller number on the number line
Second: Decide if I am going to move by Jumps (10), Skips (5) or Hops (1) and begin
Third: Make sure to record every jump, skip and hop on top of my number line so I don't lose track
Fourth: Make sure I calculate at the bottom of my number line what number each of my jumps, skips or hops has taken me to
Fifth: Figure out my addition equation from all of my jumps, skips and hops
Sixth: Solve the equation to know how many numbers are in between the two dates or how far apart the dates are from each other.
Seventh: Write down my final answer in a statement so it is clear to anyone else reading my work.

Final Reflections

Today we looked back to all of our work and learning that we have done this year to do with the History of the CPR and the growth of Calgary from a past community into the Vibrant one that it is today. We thought about and reflected on all of the positive and negative impacts the train expanding out west had. We had to reflect on the positives and the negatives and write about how we feel about trains today.

Tomorrow we will continue our final reflections as we prepare to move on and begin learning about life in an Arctic Community.

Reminder: Book Orders came home yesterday. The deadline for submitting your online order or sending in a paper order for me to complete is Monday January 21st.

Reminder: Celebration of Learning Next Week!

Attention Parents:

You’re Invited!

Dear Parents and Students,

You are invited to the grade 2 students’ Celebration of Learning on Thursday January 24th from 6-7. Your child has been working extremely hard to prepare for this Celebration of Learning and is excited to share their learning with you. Please make sure to also bring a cash donation of $5 (minimum) in order to receive  a digital copy of the Grade 2’s amazing Search for Delicious Recipe book. Your donation will go directly to the Calgary Food Bank. You are also welcome to bring a non-perishable food item donation.

We cannot wait to see you there,

From the Grade 2 team

Literacy Groups

Strategy: I can improve my reading by Extending my Vocabulary:

Today we looked at our articles to find words that we did not know the meaning of. We circled these words and then gathered as a group to review this video about using a dictionary.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYTdJcA4_vk

We then used book dictionaries and practiced using the online Dictionary Tool to help us figure out the meaning of new words.

We will continue practicing using dictionaries online and book form as a way to help us increase our reading comprehension.

We also continued using CLUES in the text to help us figure out the MAIN IDEA of what we are reading. This week we have been reading articles about the ARCTIC. Ask me something I learned or what the MAIN IDEA of the article I read is?

OUR COOKBOOK!
Illustrating our Grade 2 Search for Delicious Cookbook!

Today we thought of a special picture we could create to go in our Search for Delicious Grade 2 Cookbook. It could be a picture of the food itself or a picture of where it came from, or even a picture of us preparing the food with a special family member.

We used crayons to color in our art work.

Each of these illustrations will be compiled into one big class collage and used as a page in our cookbook. You can preview these cookbooks at our upcoming Celebration of Learning and donate to add your nam to the list to receive the link to download the entire book. We are so excited to share this with you!

Math Timelines
Yesterday we discussed important events of Calgary's past. We focused on the 1800s to start with. These were some dates that we remembered from looking like a Historian into the past:

We then were challenged to map out these dates, in sequential order from oldest date to newest date on a timeline.

We discussed how a timeline is just like a number line only it is using important dates. These dates are still numbers. We can use these numbers to do mathematical equations.

Tomorrow we will continue to map out these dates and be challenged to:

Pick 2 events. Using addition on a number line can we figure out how many years apart are they?
If you have a family member (Great-great Grandmother, Great-great Grandfather for example) that was born anytime in the 1800's please write it down and bring it to class to share and to add to your personal timeline of the 1800's!

Art, Math Sharing, and Buddies!

From the Grade 2 team

Watercolor Snow-person Art

Yesterday we painted a background for our Snow-person art. We used cool colors from the color wheel to make a winter sky background.

We could use one cool color or two or three to make our background.

Then we added salt to our wet watercolor to get a cool texture:

Today we used white paper and cut our snow-person shape. We added details for the face, eyes, nose, scarf, etc. We used pastel and rubbing to colour our circles. We put our circles together to make a birds-eye view. Ask me what birds-eye view means?

This art will go beside our How to Build a Snowman Writing after the Celebration of Learning.

MATH

We continued working on using the number line in order to add to find the difference between two numbers. We were also challenged to use the number line to subtract by hopping back by ten.

We had a Gallery walk to share out work and give feedback to our peers about things they could add, things they did well and areas where they could improve.

We then had time to go back to our posters and make changes or edits to our work.

Ask me what I changed? Ask me what I did well? Did looking at other groups work help me think about my own work?

Today some groups came up and shared their math thinking.

Buddies

Today we had buddies. We went to the Learning Commons and helped them to choose picture books that they were interested in reading. We read to them and helped the explore the learning commons and comfy reading areas available!

Welcome Back!

Reminder: If you have not yet sent in by email or paper your favorite most delicious recipe from your family, including instructions or steps, ingredients and measurements as well as why it is a special important recipe for your family and where it came from please do so ASAP. I have typed up everyone's that have come in and we are only missing 4.

Book Talks:

Reminder: Thank you to those of you who have already shared your child's Google Slides presentation with me. These book talks can be shared by clicking on the blue share button at the top of you child's presentation and then typing in my edu email address: imlagrana@educbe.ca.

Alternatively you can Get Shareable Link and Copy that to Paste into an email to my CBE account: imlagrana@cbe.ab.ca

The students have practiced sharing Google Slides with me at school so my edu email address should pop up as soon as they start typing it.

Yesterday we shared 2 presentations and today we shared 4. We will continue sharing into next week until everyone has had a turn to present their Book Talk.

Literacy

This week we have been reading a non-fiction article about the Return of the Bison to Banff National Park. We read the article and made thinknotes about it:

We also watched a video:

https://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/the-feed/bison-are-back-in-banff-national-park

Tomorrow we will be using our Think Notes and deciding what the main idea is and what clues we noticed that support the main idea.

Math

Yesterday we reviewed using an open number line to add and subtract. We looked for patterns in Carlos's Family Chart and talked about how if we can get to a landmark number adding and subtracting can be done easier and using more mental math.

Today we were challenged to figure out How old was everyone when Maria was born?

Maria is 10 so to figure out how old everyone else was when she was born we would have to either add up from 10 to the next age and figure out with an addition equation the amount between these two ages:

Or we could subtract by 10.

We practiced both ways in groups using large chart paper.

Tomorrow we will share our findings and practice some number line review...

We also practiced using the interactive hundreds chart to help us subtract by 10. Practice at home.

http://www.abcya.com/interactive_100_number_chart.htm

Inquiry

Today we worked on comparing the Canadian Pacific Railway from the Past to the Present and looking at ways they are still the same. We used a VENN diagram to do this:

We will continue to compare the trains of the past to the trains of the present and think about all that we have learned about CPR and its contributions and impact on the past and the present.
