Heat Transfer

What does it mean to Insulate?

What materials might make good insulators?

Scientific Challenge:

Can you design a thermos that will keep ice cold and prevent it from melting? Using materials around the home and school can you design a device to keep ice cold?

Heat Transfer!!!!!!!!!
Heat is a form of energy
Heat tries to move from hot to cold
Insulation is material that tries to prevent or slow down the flow of heat.
Cold is used to describe something that has a lack of heat.
When you cool something in the refrigerator, you are not adding cold, you are taking away heat.
Why do ice cubes melt?
Can you think of any examples of heat transfer in everyday life?
Make a Thermos!!!!

Tomorrow we will be coming up with our own THERMOS DESIGN that will keep an ice cube cold. If you have any extra duct tape,  cotton balls, sand, rubber bands,  that you would be willing to send in for your child to use during this time please do so before Friday February 23rd. We will be building on Friday, Testing on Monday and then re-adjusting or making changes as needed based on what we learn about insulating materials.

I will provide the two different sized cups for the insulating design but if your child is excited about doing this design a different way or has a specific idea around creating an insulator I am fine with that so long as they bring in all materials needed.
