Literacy Groups, T-Shirt Factory and Arctic Centres!

Reminder: Don't forget this Thursday night from 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm is our Parent/Student Literacy Night. Please join us for a fun hour of interesting and useful ideas to help your child learn and build their literacy skills.

Literacy Groups

On monday we changed our Literacy Groups. Some of us now go to Ms. Mann to practice literacy strategies, some of us go to Mrs. McDonald, some to Mr. Sandburg and some to Ms. Lagrana. Ask me about my literacy group and what I have been doing this week in Reading Circles.

T-Shirt Factory

We read a book called "Grandma Eudora's T-Shirt Factory" by Catherine Fosnot.

This time Nicholas is organizing T-shirts into Rolls of 10 and Loose. Today we practised using this strategy to organize our art t-shirts in the room. We made 3 rolls and had 3 loose. Ask me what number that makes and how do I know?

We then used T-charts to figure out how many were there and how many would be left if some shoppers came to our store and bought some of the t-shirts.

We talked about if we are taking some t-shirts away or some are being bought that this is the opposite of addiition and we call it subtraction and use a - symbol instead of a +.

We then got our own paper where the total number had been written down and we had to draw how many rolls (tens) and how many loose (ones) t-shirts there were in that number. Ask me if I can tell you how many rolls and how many loose in the number 48 and how I know this. Maybe I can use a t-chart on paper to show you?

Arctic Centres

Yesterday we began using Arctic Centres to start thinking about life in the Arctic and in the Territory of Nunavut. We will be looking at symbols and landmarks, animals, climate, transportation, people, geography, stories and culture of this region of Canada. Centres help us to explore the topic, share what we have learned, draw our understanding and be curious and ready to investigate into the inquiry further and come up with questions of our own.

Ask me what I explored during centres today? What do I want to know more about?

Arctic Stories

Today we read an Arctic Story called "Northern Lights The Soccer Trails by Michael Kusugak.

We will be reading lots of stories from the North. Ask  me about the characters, setting, problem and solution in this story.
