Math T-Shirt Factory Addition, Arctic Animals and Land, Iqaluit Explorations and The Water Cycle!!

Math T-Shirt Factory

Today we continued working on a problem to do with our T-Shirt Factory. Our Factory had to figure out this question:

We drew a T-Chart in our math books to organize these numbers and an equation to show what kind of problem we were working on?

Today we had to put our final TOTAL into a new t-chart and show the Total Boxes, Rolls and Loose that we had all together for our T-shirt Order.

Some of us got to come up to the board to explain our Math Thinking. We talked about the importance of showing our math thinking on paper in pictures, words, charts, diagrams etc.

If you show your work you will get more marks even with the wrong answer then if you have the right answer and cannot explain it or show how you know?

We will be working on showing our math thinking all week while we do T-shirt Factory Challenges!

Iqaluit

We watched a video of two people who travelled to Iqaluit, Nunavut. We talked about what we noticed about the landscape (tundra, permafrost, ocean, sea ice) and the houses, the school, the people and the differences and similarities to our City of Calgary, Alberta.

Arctic Animals

We also talked about animals that live in the Arctic. We brainstormed some that we knew and looked at some pictures of others we had never heard of such as the lemming, ermine and ptarmigan!

We will be starting some animal research on Google Slides next week and have our choice of researching in detail the Polar Bear or Seals. Ask me which one I am most interested in?

Science

We have been talking about the states of matter (specifically water): Solid, Liquid and Gas. Today we looked at The Water Cycle song and talked about the process water takes as it moves through our Earth. Watch the song at home and practise singing it. The song helps us to remember the important parts of the cycle.

We also talked about Properties of Liquids:

We poured water into some different containers to see what would happen. Ask me what I noticed?

Literacy: Sight Word Recognition!

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW
Reminder: Tomorrow is a Professional Development Day. There is no School! Enjoy your extra long weekend and we will see you Monday January 29th.

Today we had so much fun wearing our pajamas, reading our favorite books and showing off our favorite stuffy!

Thank you for participating in a successful and memorable LITERACY WEEK.

Literacy Strategy: Improving our Accuracy by Increasing our Sight Word Recognition:

Sight Words

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rmYfo84hyg

Please go over the sight words that your child brings home. These are words that they are practising being able to recognize by sight and spell correctly in their writing. Practice the strategies below from the Parent Pipeline as ways of reinforcing these words in their Reading and Writing. They can also write the words they are working on out on paper 4 or 5 times in different colours or using Rainbow Writing to reinforce the spelling as well as the recognition.

Rainbow Writing of Sight Words:

Science
Today in Science we reviewed what makes a water molecule.

We passed around cups full of water in it's 3 states:

Liquid Water

Solid Water-ICE

Water Vapor-Gas

We noticed some differences between water liquid, water as a solid, and water as a gas:

What causes a solid to turn into a liquid??

What causes a liquid to turn into a gas??

We will be exploring these questions in greater detail next week.

Arctic Stories

We watched an Arctic Story called "The Owl and The Raven: An Inuit Legend

You can watch it again here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xhWWdGm8fE

We had to fill out our Arctic Story sheets about Characters, Setting, Problem, Solution, Magic and Finally what lesson was this Arctic Story teaching us?

Why would this story have been important and told to Inuit Children generation after generation? What was the story explaining?

Pajama Day, Buddies, Scoop-Up Writing and States of Matter!

Reminder: Don't forget to celebrate the last day of Literacy Week please come to school dressed in your favorite pajamas (we will still go outside for recess and be playing so appropriate, comfy jammies only please!). Feel free to bring your favorite stuffy along as well as your favorite book to read during our DEAR time.

Literacy Week is so much fun!!

Yesterday our Guest Reader was Ms. Sparks! She read us a book called "My Very Last First Time" by Jan Andrews. It is the story of an Inuit girl who goes Mussel Hunting under the sea ice.

It was great to listen to Ms. Sparks read us this story.

Today we had buddies. Mrs. Lagrana read one of her favorite stories: Stranger in the Woods by Carl R. Sams and Jean Stoick.

Mrs. Mercer read one of her favorite books:

The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch.

Then we had some extra time to read with our Kindergarten Buddy.

Writing

We have been working on identifying synonyms for words in order to generate juicy words that can make our writing more interesting:

We have been trying to "scoop" up our writing by identify the cone (noun) word and then adding double scoops (adjectives) with a cherry (adjective) on top to make our writing more elaborate.

Here is an example of the model we have been talking about:

Today we wrote three sentences using this model. We uploaded our work to IRIS so you can see it there and ask me how adding double scoops and a cherry on top helps my writing?

Science
States of Matter
One of the centres we have been exploring is about solids, liquids and gases. We watched a video about States of Matter. We talked about how temperature can cause a liquid in one state to change states. We looked at how water molecules look at act different depending on if they are a solid, a liquid or a gas:

D.E.A.R. Time, Hot, Cold and Room Temperature Experiments and the Theme or Message in an Arctic Story

Literacy Week Day 1:
Today was our first day of Literacy Week. We wore Royal Oak Blue to school and had surprise D.E.A.R. time. D.E.A.R time stands for Drop Everything And Read!

Feel free to bring a library book or favorite book from home to keep in your backpack or chair buddy so that when DEAR time happens you have a book you love to read close by!

Science Experiments:

Hot, Cold, Room Temperature Experiment

We used thermometers to measure room temperature, cold water, hot water and we blended the hot and cold water together to see what temperature we would get from mixing equal parts of both.

Ask me what my group recorded for temperatures?

Ask me what was the hardest part of figuring out the temperature on the thermometer?

What did we learn happens at 0 Degrees Celsius? What about at 100 Degrees Celsius?

Tomorrow we are going to take some thermometers outside and measure the temperature of deep in the snow!!

Thermometer's can be tricky to read. We talked about looking at them from eye level and that it does make a difference if the numbers are above or below the zero.

Above the zero is a positive temperature +
Below the zero is a negative temperature -

Arctic Stories

Today we reviewed the message or lesson in the Arctic Story "The Sky Sisters". We then watched another Arctic Story called "The Legend of The Northern Lights". We had to think about the:

Characters
Setting
Problem
Solution
Message or Lesson
and if there was any Magic in the story

You can watch the video of this story here and talk about these parts of the story at home:

Reminder: If you have an article that you would like to present "Like a News Reporter" please practise, using all of the think notes and props you would like to  make your reading interesting. Video tape yourself (ask mom, dad or big sister/brother or a friend). Then if you know how post it to IRIS or just email it to imlagrana@cbe.ab.ca. Today we shared two students work who did an amazing job of this. How exciting to watch as a class and see how much student's are improving their reading fluency by practicing reading to an audience.

Literacy Night, Arctic Stories, Temperature and Goals and Strategies in IRIS

Please join us this evening from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm for our Royal Oak School Parent/Student Literacy Night. There will be 11 different literacy sessions to choose from. Come learn how to help your child become literate across the disciplines.

Reminder: Please go to one of the websites for getting a child's new article. They were posted on the blog on Monday January 8th. Please have your child find one that they are interested in and print it out to bring to school tomorrow. We will be doing this every Friday for the next month. Fridays they will get a chance to share with a partner and practice Reading Like a News Reporter!

Arctic Stories

Today we read a story about the Northern Lights. The story we read is called Sky Sisters by Jan Bourdeau Waboose.

We talked about:
-setting
-characters
-problem
-solution
-magic
-message or lesson

Ask me what I remember from this story? How does it explain the phenomenon of the Northern Lights?

We talked about what a myth is and that often a myth tells a story of how something came to be. Often a myth will have a lesson or a message for us to learn. They are stories from the ancient people of a particular culture. Many of the stories that we will be looking at come from the Inuit Peoples since they were the first inhabitants of the Canadian Arctic.

We will mostly be learning about the area in the rectangle that is the Canadian Arctic, particularly the city known as Iqaluit, in the territory of Nunavut. Sometimes there is some crossover in the stories as they are old and passed down from generation to generation.  Since Inuit people were traditionally semi-nomadic we may touch on a story that comes from the Alaskan area or the North-West Territories or the Yukon.

We also talked about how Scientists study natural phenomenon to figure out why and how they occur. Here is the scientific explanation of the Aurora Borealis:

Temperature

We have been looking at Temperature. Here is a video that helps us remember what it means when the mercury moves in a thermometer and some common temperature measurements:

We talked about how a thermometer is a weather tool. It can help us measure the temperature of things. In our Arctic Centres we have been practising using a thermometer to measure the temperature in degrees Celsius of 4 different kinds of water.

This link will take you to a interactive thermometer that you can move to see some common temperatures:

MY GOALS-IRIS

We have been writing Understanding myself as a Learner, Goals and Strategies in IRIS. Please see IRIS today and tomorrow to see what my reading goal and strategy is and how I learn best. There is a permanent link at the top of this blog so that you can log in quickly without having to go to the Royal Oak School Website.
