Our Elf Arrives, Readers Theatre, Math Number Lines and Jobs/Resources in Calgary's Past!

Today we had a very special visitor hiding in our classroom! It is our Christmas Elf.

He is challenging us to participate in doing "Random Acts of Kindness". We are so excited to accept this challenge!

We came up with as many names as we thought would be appropriate for a Christmas Elf who challenged us to do "Random Acts of Kindness" and narrowed it down to:

JINGLE JOY

Today he challenged us to make Candy Cane Cards to pass out to those nearby. We will pass them out at the end of the day to random classrooms to show kindness.

Literacy

Readers Theatre

Learning Intention: To improve our Reading FLUENCY by using the strategies:

  • Add expression into your voice by becoming the character you are reading about. How do you think they would sound? Are they quiet, loud, excited, mean, angry, boring, thoughtful? Are they an animal or a person? What kind of voice might they have?
  • Use punctuation clues to help determine if your reading voice should be excited or questioning?

Within our reading groups we were introduced to Readers Theatre.

The Readers Theatre scripts that we are practising in small literacy groups are:

The Three Little Pigs

Brown Bear, Brown Bear

The Stinky-Cheese Man

The Little Red Hen

The Cranky Bear

Ask me which part I am thinking about being

Math

Today in Math we continued exploring how many decades we could find in a Metre stick, using the rules of:

  • 9 numbers in-between each decade
  • a decade is a group of 10
  • Knowing decades helps us to add landmark numbers

We then started making out own roll-up number lines. These will help us see how many numbers are in-between decades and to help us use the decades to add double-digit numbers

Through exploring the metre stick and the Centimetre ruler (yellow ruler) we were able to problem solve that in a Centimeter ruler we could find 3 Decades and in the Metre stick we found 10.

We talked about Landmark numbers. How do Landmark numbers help us to add double digits?

We practiced adding 20+40, 10+20 and 30+20 using our Landmark numbers (Fence Posts).

Today we go a giant strip of graph paper. We used them to make our Fence Post and Picket lines for our Decades and the numbers in-between. Eventually we will have our very own number line to 100.

Jobs/Resources:

What is a Resource?

What kind of Jobs and Resources did they have in the past?

Ask me what I noticed about some of the jobs in the past?
