Tomorrow we are excited to enjoy a performance by Evergreen Theatre here at Royal Oak School. They will be performing the play "Jurrasic Bark".

Watch for Jurassic BARK!

Jurassic Bark by Meg Braem

Touring Feb-June 2017

Rex is a stray dog who has a hard time sharing his things. Polly is a paleontologist who spends her time digging in the dirt. When these two strangers come across a huge, mysterious bone deep in the ground, will they be able to work together to discover where it came from? Or will Rex bury the evidence before they can even begin? Set in Alberta’s world-famous Badlands, this dino-sized adventure explores our relationship to the creatures who came before us, and what we can learn from playing in the dirt.

Today we worked on Fluency by reading our Newspaper Articles to ourselves, to a partner and practicing for our presentations. When I am reading Fluently I am:

-re-reading
-recognizing words at sight
-sounding out words accurately
-using punctuation to make make my reading exciting and engaging for the audience
-reading the words easily
-reading with meaning/feeling
-reading at a just right pace...not to fast and not too slow, pausing at the appropriate punctuation marks, like at the end of a sentence

We also worked on Expanding our Vocabulary. The kids news articles that we are reading are full of new and interesting words. If I am not sure of a word I can:

-ask someone to define the word for me
-use dictionaries, thesauruses and glossaries as tools
-I make note of interesting words and use new vocabulary in speaking and writing
-I can think what would make sense here, given the sentence

MATH
We began making a giant number line from 0-100. We put all the names of the characters in the story and their ages on our timeline. We will be making our own smaller versions as well when we add our family ages data. We practiced skip counting backwards and forwards by 5's, 10's and 2's.

In Science we made hypothesis about what different hot and cold things temperatures on a thermometer would be. Did you know that the average temperature of Neptune is -218 Degrees Celsius?? This got us so excited and curious about the planets, their distance from the sun and all of their average temperatures.

Ask me what things I would like to know the temperature of? Make a list of I wonder what the temperature of __________ is? Bring these wonders to school and we will include them in our Hot and Cold Temperature Inquiry.
