Sports Day VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

On Thursday June 13th from 1-3:30pm our students will be brought to the gym, school compound, and field to enjoy the many sport and activity stations set up for them. 

Morning Kindergarten students are welcome to attend, as long as a parent or guardian stays to supervise. We are asking for parent volunteers from all grades to help support this event by using the SignUp Genius link below.

A Valid Police Clearance is required to volunteer at all of our school events.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART UPDATE!!

Congratulations to our students and their families! You raised $15,439.17 through our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation! We are so proud of your hard work and generous hearts! 

A special thanks to the Royal Oak Co-op for their generous donation towards our healthy snack of bananas after our Jump Day Event. 

Prizes have been submitted and will arrive at our school in approximately 2 weeks. Thank you for your amazing support of this very important cause.

Research using Text Features, Persuasive Writing and Editing, East Coast Boat Final Design and Insect Observations...

Reminder: The deadline for placing a book order from the June Scholastic Flyer is tomorrow Friday June 7th. This will ensure that the books ordered come before the last day of school. If you are wanting to place an order please do so today or tomorrow.

Text Features:

We have been reading diagrams, photographs and captions in order to find out important information about or insect such as their Life Cycle the stages their Complete Metamorphosis or Incomplete Metamorphosis and the important parts of their bodies:

We have then been practicing adding our research insects life cycle to our graphic organizers, paying close attention to each stage.  We have also been practicing sketching our insect and labeling all of it's important body parts.

We have been paying close attention to photographs and what they can help us visualize and understand about our insect/bug.

Captions can help us to understand these visuals better. It is important to read the captions when we are reading a photograph.

Next week we are excited to begin adding all of this research information we have gathered and putting it into our final Google Slides presentation of the year!

Persuasive Writing and Editing

This week we have worked hard to use or ideas from our graphic organizers to write a rough copy of our persuasive writing about which part of Canada we would like to visit the most.

We used our OREO organizer to help us with format.

We then used or Transition Words sheet to help us choose a suitable transition word for or beginning, First Reason, Second Reason,Third Reason and finally our concluding sentence. These words make our writing flow better and sound more interesting instead of and, and, and!!

We remembered to double space our rough copy so that we have lots of room for editing. We will be editing for Capitals, Periods, 'No Excuse' spelling words, and descriptive details.

We get to choose between if we want to type up our final good copy on Google Docs or if we want to use fancy writing paper to neatly print our final copy.

Final Boat Re-Design

After all of our work learning about the East Coast of Canada, investigating Boats and Buoyancy and designing and redesigning boats we are working in groups to design one final prototype of the perfect East Coast ship. 

We are taking turns talking through what worked the best, what did not work well and combining our ideas to come up with one final prototype. 


We will be using Explain Everything to talk through why this is the perfect design and reflecting on why we chose the ways we did.

Insect Observations

We looked at insect and bug specimens. We observed these specimens through the lens of a ENTOMOLOGIST. We looked for body parts, sketched what we saw, labelled our sketches and wrote notes about what we knew, thought and were wondering about each specimen:

Reminder: Tomorrow is bike to school day. If you child is participating please ensure that they have the tag that came home Thursday attached to their bike handlebars.A snack of Orange slices will be available between 8:40am and 9:10am. Don't forget to bring your water bottles!

Grade 1 & 2 students can pick up their bikes on the compound at the back of the school following the afternoon dismissal.

Reading like a Researcher

All week for literacy we are Reading like Researchers. We finished using non-fiction articles about our insect of choice, making think marks (annotating) and filling out our graphic organizers. Tomorrow we will start using non-fiction books and adding to our information. 

We are also paying close attention to text features that can help us learn more information such as table of contents, index, glossaries, pictures, captions, heading, titles, diagrams, maps, etc. 

Math Word Problems

Today we continued working on a math word problem. We worked in groups to follow the CUBES steps and share our understanding of the steps involved in solving word problems.

We made sure to check that we were following all of the CUBES steps in order to make sure we did not miss an important part of the process:

Tomorrow we will continue sharing our process and strategies and then begin a new word problem.

Insect Exploration

Today we walked to the top of the hill above PRATT to observe insects in their natural habitat. We had to observe, collect and sketch. Ask me what insects/bugs I found:

We also learned that some insects live in colonies and are social.

Definition of social insect

: an insect (such as a termite or bee) that lives in a colony or community with other individuals of the same species.

Later in the week we will go up to the Grassy Area of the Hill to compare what we can find there to what we found today. 

Bike to School Day, 3D Nets, Insect Research..

REMINDER: THERE IS NO SCHOOL TOMORROW FRIDAY MAY 31ST! HAVE A GREAT LONG WEEKEND!

Royal Oak School Parents and Guardians,

Our annual Bike to School Day is fast approaching. On Tuesday June 4th Royal Oak School Families and Staff are encouraged to participate in the Bike to School Day come Rain or Shine. 

Bike tags and further information (including a map) will be sent home with Kindergarten students on Thursday May 30th, and with Grade 1-3 students on Monday June 3rd. Bike tags must be brought to the school on your student's handlebars for ease of organization and storage in the School Gym. Students are welcome to drop off their bikes from 8:40am - 9:10am. PM KG students can drop their bikes off to the Gym before class, between 12:50pm and 1:03pm.

A snack of Orange slices will be available between 8:40am and 9:10am. Don't forget to bring your water bottles!

***NOTE: Different Locations for KINDERGARTEN PICKUP***

All Kindergarten Bike to School participants (AM & PM) will be dismissed through the Gym door closest to the houses at the back of the school and Non-Participants will have a regular dismissal at the KG doors.

Grade 1 & 2 students can pick up their bikes on the compound at the back of the school following the afternoon dismissal. 

Grade 3 students will be dismissed through the Gym, and will pick up their bikes on their way out to the compound.

Scholastic Book Order Reminder: The last book order of the year went home last week.  If you are interested in placing an order please do so by Friday June 7th to ensure adequate time for the order to arrive before the last day of school! 

3D Nets, and Building

We have continued exploring 3D shapes and their properties:

After observing many different types of 3D shapes and becoming more familiar with their properties we had a chance to build paper 3D models, using a variety of nets!

Small, Crawling, and Flying Creatures Research

This week we have been discussing and sharing things that we know about insects and bugs and things that we want to know. We decided upon a small, crawling, or flying creature to research. 

During Literacy we will be reading nonfiction articles and nonfiction texts and making think notes to add to our Research Graphic Organizers:

Today we learned about Life Cycle and some important scientific vocabulary words that explain the parts of a life cycle :

We talked about some life cycles including different stages that some include such as Butterflies, frogs, dragonflies and more...


In the afternoons we have been then using computers to research websites and use some videos and diagrams to help us add to our research.

Persuasive Writing

Today we finished our Persuasive writing. We have been practicing using OREO graphic organizers to plan out our ideas and follow a persuasive writing format:

Once we planned out ideas we then wrote our rough copy in or writing books focusing on adding in important transition words to make our sentences flow and our writing more convincing:

3D Shapes

This week we are working on 3-Dimensional shapes. Identifying them and their important attributes and features.

We are learning some new math vocabulary:

Faces, Edges, Vertex (Vertices or Corners)

We had to try and figure out how many faces, vertices, and edges each of the shapes observed had as well as any features or special attributes. We drew it and explored the net of the 3D shape:

Comparing 3 Communities/Places in Canada

We have finally finished our quilt of Nova Scotia. Our quilt is made up of 12 categories we studied and learned about when exploring Nova Scotia.


Our Quilts are beautiful and tell a story about what we remember most and have learned about Nova Scotia

We have also been completing a Venn Diagram of the 3 communities in order to compare and contrast these areas of Canada. This is the first time we have used a triple Venn in order to look at similarities and differences between the three communities:
