Valentines Day and Short Week next week!

Reminder: Next week is a very short week as there is NO SCHOOL on Thursday and Friday February 14th and 15th due to Teachers Convention. 

Monday February 18th there is also NO SCHOOL due to the Family Day holiday. 

Valentines Day

We will will talking about friendship, kindness and caring all week. On Wednesday February 13th if you wish to you may send in valentines cards that your child will be able to distribute during circle time and at the end of the day. There will be no valentines party and we ask that no candy or food is sent in with the cards.

Polar Bears Past Midnight, Maps of the Arctic, Math and Temperature!

Polar Bears Past Midnight

Yesterday we finished reading our class novel "Polar Bears Past Midnight". Today we did a final reflection and picture and talked about theme and captions.

Maps of the Arctic

Today we continued working on Arctic Centres. One area we have been looking at is the map of Canada and where the Canadian Arctic is on a map and a globe.

We looked at an interactive map and then had a chance to label some important parts of our own one.

We labeled The Arctic Ocean, Nunavut, Iqaluit, The Hudson Bay and Baffin Bay. We looked at the Arctic Circle and some other parts of the world that it includes.

Math

Today we practiced solving number line addition problems multiple ways. Ask me to show you:

Temperature

Today we used all of our temperature measurements from different areas around our school. We used our data to fill out 3 paper thermometers. Filling in a thermometer can be tricky because instead of the numbers going horizontal like we are used to on a number line, they go up and down. Also we have not practiced moving by negative numbers. For practice at home I could try looking at a thermometer and recording these numbers on paper.

We compared these temperatures and were tasked with thinking about why the heat energy would be different in different areas around Royal Oak School.

Next week we will graph some of these into our own personal bar graphs as well as measure some more temperatures from outside our school. This should give us some more practice with negative numbers and moving down on a thermometer!!! Thermometers are basically vertical number lines.

Alien-In-Line Skating Reminder!

Arctic Centres

Today we started exploring more about the Arctic. We have ten centres to explore:

1. Arctic Stories 
2. Arctic Maps
3. Landmarks and Symbols
4. Temperature
5. Hot and Cold Sort
6. Transportation
7. Arctic fact non-fiction
8. The Polar Bear Problem: Problems facing the polar bear in the Arctic
9. Animal adaptations in the Arctic 
10. Polar Bear Research

We will use our visual sketch books to complete questions, sketches and important information from each of these centres. Today we completed 1 centre. Ask me what I learned? Ask me what I would like to learn more about? Ask me which centres I explored today. 

Arctic Stories

Today we read "The Raven and the Loon". There are many versions of this story. 

We used our Visual Sketchbooks to draw our understanding of:
-Title?
-Characters?
-Setting and important descriptive (powerful) words or pictures from the setting
-Problem or main event?
-Magical solution or how the problem was solved?
-Lesson or Message from the story?


Math

Today we continued practicing adding 2 double-digit numbers together using a number line. When I add 2 double digit numbers together (for example 23+15) I can start with either number and jump, skip or hop the other one to get to a total. Today we talked about picking the most EFFICIENT number to start with so that my addition can be quicker.

Predicting, Temperature and Thermometers, Landmark Numbers

This week in Literacy we are working on making predictions. 

This strategy will help me have a deeper understanding of what I am reading.

Temperature and Thermometers

This week we continued to practice reading a thermometer. 

This week we experimented and made hypothesis's about temperature of water at different levels of heat. We had to use the thermometer and take the temperature of the water. From the temperatures we had to figure out which water was hot, which was cold and which was warm. 

We brainstormed some other things that we would like to take the temperature of. 

Next week we will go outside and within other areas of the school to measure more temperatures!

Landmark Numbers and Decades

Today we continued working with Decades and figuring out which decade a number would fall between and where the number would be put on the number line, knowing which 2 decades it was between:

We then practiced using open number lines to add 2 double-digit numbers together. 

This is different than when we looked at how many numbers were in-between a bigger number and a smaller number. This time we can just start at the most efficient number and add our jumps, skips and hops to get a total.

Inuit Artifacts

Today we finished looking at many different Inuit Artifacts. Our job was to sketch, label and write 2 I thinks and 1 I wonder about what we were looking at.

Today we got to share with the other groups and then find out if our predictions were correct.

We looked at the actual Inuktitut word for the artifact, what it was or is used for today, and what it was made out of.

Later we will add water colour to our sketches.

Sky Sisters

Yesterday we read an Arctic story about two sisters called Sky Sisters by Jan Waboose

We then figured out some important things about the story through drawing, reflecting and taking some notes:

-title
-author
-characters
-setting
-important part or problem
-solution
-magic
-final lesson or message of the story

Number Line

We worked on solving number line addition problems using jumps, skips and hops. We practiced writing equations to go with the number line in order to add up a total at the end. 

How many numbers are there between two numbers? We have been exploring this all week using steps:
1: Draw the number line and place your smaller number on the left and your larger number on the right at the end. 
2. Use jumps, skips and hops to get to the larger number. 
3. Make sure you are adding as you go after each jump, skip or hop at the bottom of the number line so that you don't lose track.
4. Write an addition equation to figure out how many jumps, skips and hops that you did. Remember do not add the number you started at as you are already there!
5. Solve your addition equation. Be efficient. Group together all your 10's first, then your 5's. Did you use friendly numbers? Landmark numbers?

SKATING
January 25, 2019

Hello Parents and Guardians!

The Royal Oak School Physical Education department is pleased to provide you with the opportunity to join us for an evening of Ice Skating. Please join us on either Tuesday, February 5th or Thursday, February 7th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Royal Oak Community outdoor rink. We will have skates and helmets available to borrow from the Skate Shack. There will be music, hot chocolate and coffee. We hope to see you there!

Kid Sport Calgary has generously donated the use of their Skate Shack, which is a trailer full of skates! The skate shack will provide us with child, youth and adult skates as well as helmets. You will need to sign out the equipment with one of our volunteers. All persons on the ice during this time will be required to wear a helmet and the equipment will be available on a “first come, first served basis.”

All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. School staff will not be supervising this event. If a child is coming with an adult other than their parent/guardian, they would not be able to participate unless they have a written note from their parent/guardian indicating that another parent/guardian will supervise them for this activity.

We are looking for volunteers to help setting up the music, managing the skate shack (handing out and bringing in the equipment). Also, assistance is needed attending to the hot beverage area. Temperature

Today we started talking about temperature. We looked at the weather in Calgary and compared it to the weather in Iqaluit. We learned how to read the weather and that the unit of measurement is degrees celsius.

IRIS GOALS
