BOKS UPDATE, Book Orders Due, Planting Fun and Narrative Non-Fiction!

Boks Update:

The last day of BOKS will be Thursday, June 14th.

Reminder: Book orders are due online or by cheque and order forms by this Friday, June 8th. This is the last order for the school year!

Reminder: Monday, June 11 from 10-11 we will be taking a walking field trip to our wetlands to look for signs of insects. We will be using bug boxes, magnifying glasses, and pond dipping! We require 3 volunteers. If you are able to join us on this adventure please email imlagrana@cbe.ab.ca

Narrative Non-Fiction:

We are looking at three different types of text and their text features.
Non-Fiction
Fiction
Narrative Non-Fiction

Today we investigated text features of Non-Fiction books. We had to look at a page or two from a non-fiction book and find the clues (text features) that made us think it was a non-fiction book and not a fiction or narrative fiction book.

We learned some new non-fiction text features and then practiced being detectives to find these features in our insect non-fiction classroom books:

We then uploaded a video or a picture of our book to IRIS, with an explanation of what clues we had found that had helped us to determine if our book was, in fact, non-fiction text. Please go and watch my video or look at my picture and comment in IRIS.

We have also been talking about NARRATIVE NONFICTION:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFrm7lxryB8

Tomorrow we will be practicing turning a page of our Non-Fiction insect book into a Narrative Fiction story!

Amazing Insect Videos

We also had some time to go onto National Geographic Kids and look at some very interesting insect videos! Tak a moment and explore some more at home. Tomorrow we will aim to make a decision about what Alberta Insect we would like to research.

Planting FUN!!

Today we did some top secret planting for top secret reasons!! Don't ask me any questions!!!!

James and the Giant Peach

We are now on Chapter 19 of James and the Giant Peach: Ask me what is going on right now in the book?

Bike to School Day and Insects!

ROS students are encouraged to participate in Bike to School Day tomorrow! Please check your son or daughter's backpack for their Bike Tag and a letter filled with important information about the event.

Science
Small Crawling and Flying Creatures!!

Today we started exploring small, crawling and flying insects by going up to the top of our Field and observing what we saw. We created I See/I Think/I Wonder note in our Visual Sketchbooks. Tomorrow we will be going up again and taking more scientific sketches, notes and drawings. Next week we will be going to the Wetlands on Monday June 11th from 10-11. Notes will come home tomorrow regarding this, but if you are able and interested in volunteering please email me at imlagrana@cbe.ab.ca.

James and the Giant Peach

Today we read up to Chapter 13 of James and the Giant Peach. Ask me what new characters we met? If you have missed a few days please feel free to listen along until you get to the end of Chapter 12.

Fiction or Non-Fiction??

Today we read the book Are you an Ant?

We then tried to figure out if this book was fiction or non-fiction based on the clues from the text. Some of us thought Non-Fiction because it was full of true facts and information about Ants.

Some of us thought that it must be fiction because the pictures were not real photographs and the information was told like a story.

Some of us thought that maybe there is another category that this series would fit into that has some of both non-fiction and fiction combined? We will keep investigating this and see if there is a different genre that this series would fit into.

We will keep investigating this through our reading.

Maud Lewis Art, Volunteer Tea, and 10 Things About Nova Scotia!

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out for the Volunteer Tea. Thank you for all that you do and we hope you enjoyed the performances, art, and food!

REMINDER: The last scholastic book orders of the year went home this week. They are due back by next Friday, June 8th. You can send them to the class with a cheque or you can fill the orders out yourself online at https://canadaclubs.scholastic.ca/en/home  and I will get an email notification. ***Please do not send cash.

ART

Today we did the last step of our Maud Lewis Nova Scotia Landscape art. Yesterday we added our secondary paint layers or details we needed such as ocean waves, rocks, grass moving and clouds.

We then did paper ripping to add our Nova Scotia background details such as lighthouses, whales, fish, birds, the sun or boats...

After gluing these on we added any last minute painting or sharpie details such as the lines on our lighthouses, eyes or mouths, or sails on our boats.

Ten Things about Nova Scotia

Today we finished our 10 Things about Nova Scotia graphic organizer. Next week we will use this to write a small piece about Nova Scotia to go with our Maud Lewis Art.

PLASTIC PROBLEM

Today we continued talking about the Platic in the Ocean. We have been watching and discussing possible solutions, from multiple points of view.

Boyan Slat-The Ocean Clean-Up Prototype

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLAq19hGTBw

We looked at how this prototype has had to be tested, redesigned and tested in order to ensure that it works properly and to find the errors so that it can be made better (just like when we are building or inventing boats or magnetic inventions or water filters!)

https://www.theoceancleanup.com/

We have also been looking at plastic alternatives as a solution:

https://www.theoceancleanup.com/

https://www.waterdocs.ca/water-talk/2017/12/19/8-single-use-plastic-items-you-can-quit-right-now

We spent time today coming up with ideas and prototypes for these inventions. We looked at the problem in two ways:

1. How can we fix it now?

2. How can we prevent it for the future?

Math

Today we continued practicing double-digit subtraction with regrouping. Ask me to show you the steps to solve one of these problems!

Tomorrow we will start our family timelines. If you have not sent in a paper with family ages on it yet please do so.
