This week we will be reading new nonfiction articles about Nova Scotia's Geography. From these articles, after reading multiple times and making think notes we will be challenged to make inferences.

Sinking and Floating

Today we were challenged with making something that sinks float. We had to hypothesis about what we were going to do and why we thought that might make the plasticine float:

Ask me what designs I tried, if they worked, and if they did not what I would try next time?

We decided that shape, size, even and stable walls, hollowness and no holes all helped make a successful floater.

Next we were challenged to make a floater sink!!

Through classroom discussion we agreed to try adding weight to our floaters to see if we could sink them this way. Ask me how many marbles or objects until my floater sank? Ask me some other ways I could have made a floater sink besides adding weight?

We are excited to announce the approach of Canadian Children’s Literature Week at ROS during the week of May 6, 2019 - May 10, 2019. We have planned a variety of exciting activities to encourage and engage students in a love of literature. Each day of the week will have a special theme, as well as daily DEARs (Drop Everything And Read). The week will go as follows:

Monday, May 6th: Wear Royal Oak Blue Spirit Day - Let's spread community spirit! On the first day of Literacy Week, we encourage everyone to wear their Royal Oak Blue! Ms. Bradbury and Ms. Sparks will be joining various classes to read!

Tuesday, May 7th: Spring Into Reading Day - Spring is here, let’s welcome it! On the second day of Literacy Week, we want to see spring colours. Wear your Spring Colours and Spring outfits. Ms. Bradbury and Ms. Sparks will be joining various classes to read!

Wednesday, May 8th: Grow a Royal Reader Day - We are exalted to announce Grow a Royal Reader Day. On the third day of Literacy week, we encourage you to dress like royalty. Students will continue to celebrate reading and Spring with a royal planting session. Don’t forget to dig out your favourite royal outfit and dress like a Knight, Princess, Prince, King, Queen or Jester!

Thursday, May 9th: Cosy Up To A Book Day - Nothing beats cozying up to a good book in your pajamas! On the fourth day of Literacy week, we ask you to wear you favourite pajamas to school. As well, students will be visited by a guest author, Pamela McDowell.

Friday, May 10th: Dress Like Your Favourite Character Day - We want to find out who your favourite character is. On the fifth day of Literacy week, we ask that you please dress up like your favourite character. Please come to school already dressed up and bring your matching book to spread the love of our favourite books. Classes will get together with their buddy classes and teachers will share their all-time favourite books.

We continued to look at Nova Scotia and have been reading, drawing and discussing the Geography and Jobs and Resources of this Canadian Province.

We looked specifically at important jobs and  natural resources of this area and why they are important to people who live in Nova Scotia:

We looked at the definition of Natural Resources and talked about what resources Nova Scotia has. We learned about Fish and Seafood, especially LOBSTER! We looked at why seafood and fish are an important Natural Resource for Nova Scotia and how they bring in lots of money to Nova Scotia.

We talked about how natural resources provide jobs for the people and we watched a video from an Acadian Lobster Fisherman explaining his job and how it has changed over time.

Testing my Boat Design-Thinking like a Naval Architect!

Today we got to test our first boat design. After designing like a Naval Architect


After testing for specific requirements such as:

Stability
Floating/Buoyancy
Load/Cargo
Movement
Shape

We each had to fill out a self-assessment on how or first prototype had done:

Over the next few weeks we will be learning many scientific concepts in relation to boats and buoyancy. We will then apply what we have learned to re-design our perfect east coast boat! 

Buoyancy

Today we tested the buoyancy of different materials. We had to make a hypothesis and test things from around our classroom to see if they were buoyant or not! Some things were surprising because they seemed heavy and we thought that they would sink (pumpkin, orange) but they floated. 

We talked about Buoyant Force, Gravitational Force and Density as important scientific vocabulary:

Math Word Problems:

We are continuing to practice using CUBES as a strategy to help us extract the pertinent information from word problems in order to figure out what the question is asking us to solve:

When we follow these steps we are more likely to find the information that we need in order to successfully solve the problem. 

We have also been focusing on using the number line to subtract.

CLEAN TEETH SPECIAL VISIT

Today we had a special visit from the dental hygienist and the dentist to help us remember how to better take care of our teeth and have good oral hygiene. Ask me what I learned?

East Coast Communities and Culture

This week we read a book called Hold on, McGinty by Nancy Hatry and Don Kilby

This book begins in the East coast and the main Character Jack McGinty a local fisherman is unable to find anymore fish in the Atlantic Ocean and ends up traveling to Vancouver where his daughter lives to find a fresh start on West Coast.


We looked at a map of Canada and added the East Coast and Nova Scotia to our map.

We will continue looking at some of the cultures and people that make up this part of Canada; both their past and their present day to day lives.

Boats and Buoyancy

Yesterday we started looking at a few different types of boats. We started with the wooden row boat that Mcginty used to catch fish. We looked at some boats that would be common on the East Coast of Canada and what their purposes would be.

We looked through the discipline of a Naval Architect in order to become designers of a boat that will:

-float
-be stable
-carry a load
-be waterproof
-be safe and strong in a storm
-be able to move

We will be building these boats next week Monday April 15th. We will have some of these materials available at school but if your child has a particular design in mind, please have them bring the materials to school on Monday. We want them to build at school and be involved in the design and eventually redesign process.

Good morning Royal Oak School Families,

Many students at Royal Oak School are excited to celebrate the Calgary Flames advancing to Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  To celebrate this success, we are inviting all students to wear Calgary Flames Gear, red shirts, Royal Oak Blue or the jersey of their favourite team on Thursday, April 11^th.

This is the same day as our class photos so if you prefer not to participate that is fine. Alternatively, if you want, your child could bring a jersey and switch after they have had their photos in the A.M. Or if you are fine with them being in their Jersey's for pictures that is an option as well. Please just ensure that your child knows which option you prefer.

Reading Like a News Reporter Continued!

This week we have been continuing to practice READING LIKE A NEWS REPORTER. Student's printed out new articles of interest and have been practicing all of the parts of reading fluently during literacy groups and with a partner.  Another way to help build expression and fluency is to practice role playing as if you were that character. We have been having fun trying to read like the below emotions or characters!! You can try this at home with your article or just with a page or two of your favorite book! 

Subtraction

Taking away tens:

Today we practiced moving backwards by tens and also groups of tens. We used a hundreds chart and looked at the patterns we were seeing.

We practiced using number lines to solve a double digit subtraction problem now that we have become experts at stacking 

We investigated the relationship between addition and subtraction and practiced first solving using subtraction and then addition to see how the equation changes and how we can do both on the number line.

We then practiced solving both ways using white boards. Ask me which way I like best and why?

We will be practicing number line subtraction and the reverse addition equation that goes with our subtraction equation all week long. 

Communities Comparison
Comparing The Prairies and the Arctic in our Venn Diagrams:


Today we looked back on all of our work and understanding when we were thinking like Historians and uncovering Calgary's past as well as looking at Alberta and the past and present of Calgary. We added what we remembered to our Venn Diagram. We had to think of all of the things that make up a culture and what parts make Calgary (past and present) distinct and unique. 


Tomorrow we will look at the things that are the same between these two parts of Canada and reflect on 3 things:

Word Work

Today we practiced the vowel sound in -ou and -ow and came up with as many words as possible that follow this pattern. Ask me which words I came up with and some new ones that I learned?

Green Shirt Day – Monday, April 8^th, 2019

On April 7, 2018, a young Albertan named Logan Boulet became an organ donor in the aftermath of the tragic Humboldt Bronco bus crash. By registering as a donor, Logan saved the lives of six others, and his story inspired thousands of people around the world to register as organ and tissue donors.

Logan’s generosity resulted in a spontaneous movement dubbed “The Logan Boulet Effect” — a huge spike in people signing up to be organ donors. According to Alberta Health, during the month of April 2018 there were 28,855 Albertans who registered to become a donor — an almost three-fold increase from the usual 10,000 who sign up monthly.

April 7th, the day Logan passed away and helped 6 others through his Organ donations, has been designated as Green Shirt Day. The Canadian Transplant Association and the family of Logan Boulet will carry on Logan's legacy by recognizing April 7th as Green Shirt Day, raising awareness of the need for registered organ and tissue donors so that access to life saving and life transforming transplants can be improved. To mark this annual event, 17 landmarks around the world, including the Calgary Tower and Niagara Falls, will be lit green this year. 

This year, April 7th is on a Sunday and so we invite your child to please wear a Green Shirt or Royal Oak blue to school ​for Logan and Organ Donor Awareness on Monday, April 8th.

Literacy

It has been so much fun watching your IRIS videos. You worked so hard and improved so much. I will comment on each of your videos with some feedback. Please make sure to check IRIS for my feedback. If you have not yet posted try to do so this weekend as we will continue sharing a few of these each day during literacy groups. 

In Literacy we will continue with building our fluency. The homework came home in each child's home communication folder. Pick a new article of choice. Practice reading out loud with adding expression, reading at a good pace and volume and making sure to expand your vocabulary by circling words you do not know the meaning of or are unable to sound out or pronounce. Use www.wordhippo.com to help you figure out a different word that means the same thing but is more comfortable for you to use. Next week we will have time to practice reading this article to others and perfecting our fluency.

Animal Research Presentations

Today we finished sharing our Animal Research Google Slides presentations. We practiced giving feedback to our classmates and being a good listening audience. Depending on whose room your child presented in you will see a comment in Google Slides from either myself or Ms. Boston regarding your work. It was so inspiring to see how much you learned and researched about Arctic Animals and also about using a new technology. Next week we will get to use Google Docs to type up our Arctic Animal stories.

IRIS POSTING

Today we got to use a new APP called Explain Everything. We used it to explain our math thinking and steps to solve a double digit subtraction problem using stacking and base ten as our strategy.  Please go to IRIS and watch me explain my math!

Circle Fridays!!!
