Measuring Body Temperature

If you have a digital thermometer that you are willing to send in a ziploc bag with your child's name we would love to be able to meausure our body temperatures this week. The thermometers at school work ok but not the best for accuracy. They are ok for hot and cold water or ice water but not so accurate under an armpit! If you have one you are willing to let your child use at school and then return please send it ASAP.

Dear Parents and Guardians of Grades 1, 2 & 3 students,

We are excited to be offering Wonder Hour Clubs at Royal Oak School in April and May.  Wonder Hour is an opportunity for students to engage for one hour in cross-grade, co-curricular activities in an area that interests them!  They will take place during Friday on April 3, 17, and 24 and May 1, 8, and 29.  Students will have an opportunity to select their top three Wonder Hour choices during class next week. We are hoping that you can take the time to read and discuss the Wonder Hour descriptions with your child so they can make an informed decision next week. We would like to thank the Royal Oak School Fundraising Society for supporting supplies required to run successful clubs!

happening at Royal Oak School this year!

Name of Club	Description
The World of Harry Potter	Become a student at Hogwarts by immersing yourself in experiences only fit for a true wizard.  Muggles are excepted.  You will be sorted into your Hogwarts House, play Quidditch, learn potions and compete in a Tri-Wizard Tournament among many other activities.  “Working hard is important but there is something that matters even more: believing in yourself!”
Introduction to Coding Games	This club is for beginners who have not experienced coding before. Students will work through basic coding skills through games on code.org
Keva Blocks	Keva Block building challenges! Students will use their knowledge of building and creativity to solve a variety of challenges using Keva Blocks.
LEGO Club	LEGO building challenges every week!
D&D: Wizards, Elves, and Rogues	Role playing, story building, and cooperative problem solving. Students will learn to play a simplified version of Dungeons and Dragons. They will create a character, create a map, and use problem solving, dice rolls, and team work to solve challenges and build a story in a fantasy world.
Board Games	Students will explore a variety of different board games in cooperative teams.
Multimedia Arts	Every week we will do a different mulit-media art or craft project.  We will use paper, craft supplies, paint, plasticine etc.
Sing and Move	The Grade 1&2 Sing and Move Club will prepare some music/movement for our Volunteer Tea
French Culture	French Culture Club- Students will be introduced to French language, art, music and culinary delights.
Puppet Making & Storytelling	Retell popular stories orally and perform these stories using puppets created from a variety of materials. Design and create different types of puppets to use in creating mini puppet theatre performances.
Curling	Students will learn about indoor curling and will have the opportunity to participate in a round robin tournament
Art	Students will explore a variety of media and techniques to create artwork.
Outdoor Club	Students will participate in a variety of outdoor activities, rain or shine. We will meet each week in the gathering space and play games/activities on the field/compound/hill/wetlands!  Some examples of possible activities include: scavenger hunts, mini hike, exploring our wetland, walking wise, finding sit spots, sharing circle, picnic, capture the flag, the animal game, hop scotch, cloud watching, catching and identifying bugs, flowers, trees, etc.

For Valentines Day

This year we will Celebrate Valentines day as Friendship and Caring Day on Wednesday February 12th. For the last 30 minutes of the day students will be allowed to exchange cards and watch a friendship story. If you are going to send in Valentines with your child please ensure that they have one for every child in our class. Please DO NOT send in any candy or treats. Below is a class list to ensure you have all of the names of the student's in our class. It is up to you if you choose to participate and it is not an expectation.

3-2-1 Summarizing, Adding Double Digits with Re-Grouping, Heat and Temperature, and Arctic Stories...

Book Orders came home today. If you would like to place an order online or send one in with a cheque please do so by Wednesday February 5th, 2020 in order to allow sufficient time for ordering and recieving back before Valentines Day.

Literacy

3-2-1Summarzing!!

This week we have continued practicing summariing using a 3-2-1 graphic organizer:

Please read the Polar Bear Facts sheet and fill out the accompanying 3-2-1 graphic organizer. We will be using this 3-2-1 style of sumarizing for reading but also for when we take notes watching a video or listening to a story. 

Math

Adding Double Digit Numbers With Regrouping

This week we have continued practicing adding double digits using base ten and place value mats. We have then practiced putting this work into our math books in an organized and efficient way. 

First we build our two double-digit numbers. Eventually we will not need to build anymore and can just draw or represent our thinking with numerals but for now it helps us to understand what is happening with the place value when we need to regroup. 

This time our ones can make a new ten. When that happens we can circle the new ten and move it on over to Ten Street! It is more efficient for it to live in the tens. 

Don't forget to cross out your old amount of tens and add in the new one for a new number. Also don't forget that all those ones you circled to ake a new ten and now gone. Don't recount them they moved on to ten street!

Many students have asked if I would pt these base ten virtual manpulative's on the blog so that they can practice at home. They should still be practicing on paper as well to learn the orgaization of their math with paper and pencil but this is also a fun way to practice. After clicking on the link choose:

Heat and Temperature

We have been starting to talk about what we know about Heat and Temperature. We grouped items into Hot or Cold based on things that we knew. We also noticed that some things such as a classroom might fall into hot or cold depending on the season. 


We also looked at home thermometers work and are excited to begin working with them and practicing using them to measure heat.

We have been talking about how we different tools are used to measure different things such as rulers, number lines, thermometers, scales etc.

The students were very interested in thermomstat's and how they are used to turn up or down a house or buildings heat. We have been watching our classroom thermostat and recording the temperature it is at everyday. If you are able please visit your home thermostat with your child and write down what your home temperature is normally, plus visit where the furnace in your home is. We will be having a tour of the school to find out where our school heating comes from.

Listening to all of these Arctic stories and thinking about the parts of the story will help us when we begin to create a storyboard for our own Arctic Story next week.

On Monday January 27th we are celebrating Literacy by wearing

Royal Oak School will be recognizing Family Literacy Day on Monday January 27th. Students are invited to wear pajamas, bring a stuffy and a favourite book to share with a friend. Regular curricular activities will continue on this day so please make sure your child wears pajamas that allow them to participate in recess, gym, etc (no footed pajamas or nightgowns)

MATH
Addition using Base Ten and T-Charts:

This week we continued to look at double digit numbers and adding them together using base ten materials and t-charts. In groups we came up with a name for our own t-shirt factory and then we were give our first order! We had to take 2 double-digit numbers and organize them within a t-chart and then add these numbers together to get a total.

We used place value mats and base ten materials to build the first number.

We then built our second double digit number underneath the first number:

We then had to put the numbers together, starting from the ones to get a total nummber:

Once we had a total we were encouraged to proove if our answer was accurate by solving another way.

This week we continued to practice summarizing Non-Fiction text. We worked in groups to practice summarizing before we read using text features such as title, pictures, and headings to help us make a prediction about what the main idea was going to be about.

We then Read the article, paying attention to SUPPORTING DETAILS and KEY WORDS within the article and made note of these in our graphic organizers:

Today we made our very own water cycle bag! Ask me about the steps of the water cycle and what would happen if the water cycle STOPPED. 

Tape it to a window in the house facing the sun and watch the water cycle happen!

We even got to do an experiment about cleaning dirty water. We got to try out a filter to see if it would keep sand or gravel out of the water:

An adventure awaits your child at Bow Habitat Station!

Here are a few of tips and reminders from Bow Habitat’s Education Team:

·      Please let your child’s teacher know PRIOR to the trip if there are any known fish allergies.

·      Please bring:

o   Packed lunch/snacks/water bottle

o   Clean indoor footwear-pack in your backpack in order to be allowed in to feed the fish it is MANDATORY or you will not be able to particpate in this portion of the field trip if you forget to bring a seperate pair of clean, indoor shoes. 

o   We will leave all unnecessary items at school: snow pants, library books, etc.

Reminders for parent volunteers from Bow Habitat’s Education Team:

·      Please ensure you bring an extra pair of clean indoor shoes (must have to enter the fish hatchery)

Math

The T-Shirt Factory!

This week we have read the book Grandma Eudora's T-Shirt Factory:

We have been challenged to look at double digit numbers and triple digit numbers and organize the like Nicholas into Rolls of Ten (tens) and Loosse (ones). 

We have used snap cubes to model this visually and have been looking at the concept of Equivalence and Efficiency when breaking apart numbers. 

Next week we will create our own T-shirt Factory in groups and use what we have learned to add double digit numbers together using t-charts and stacking. We will also be using base ten materials to model and practice this. Ask me what I am thinking about naming my T-Shirt Factory!! 

Today we had the Area Math Specialist into our classroom to learn 2 new Math Games and practice playing them!

The Water Cycle

We continue to learn about the Water Cycle and have been listening to songs and looking at diagrams and reading books about this important and amazing thing called water!

We even practiced being water molecules in liquid form, solid form, and gas form! Ask me what that looked like?!

On Wednesday we got to go outside and view a demonstration using water and the air in order to observe water in all 3 of its states!

Arctic Stories

We will be reading many Arctic Stories over the next month. Yesterday we read the story "The Raven and the Loon" by Rachel and Sean Qitsualik

Today we read "The Sky Sisters" by Jan Bourdeau Waboose

We have been listening and sketching when we hear details about characters, setting, problems, solutions, magic and a message or lesson the story is trying to teach us. This brainstorming will help us when it is time to write our own Arctic Story!
